fight should have been made in '96. '99 definitely wouldn't have been a good idea for Collins coming off a two year retirement, he would have gotten obliterated.
Not really, didn't you notice he started talking louder and faster to try and drown him out? I agree with Commando, during that time period Collins was done. He tried a come back and blacked out during sparring. RJJ never reliezed that Collins was perfect for him at that time, or maybe he did and was decent about it?
My favorite part of the video though is Roy ranting in the background of Larry Merchant, with Larry signing off "Tonight we brought you junk!"
A flashback to when boxing had really charismatic stars like RJJ, not some flat bores like Wlad or Pac or dull wannabe thugs like Mayweather.. At the beginning: Roy 'yeah I have a couple fights left' - if only he knew... And I love Larry Merchant for not being afraid to ask unconfortable questions and to tell it just like it is: 'tonight we brought you junk!'
Collins was coming back to fight Jones after this, they had agreed provisionally but got knocked out by Eastman in sparring so decided against it
Never seen that before. Roy states he'll fight anyone, then when Collins pops into the ring completely ignores him, classic!
Lamar Parks, Julian Jackson, Michael Nunn - all put their names forward to challenge Jones in '93, '94 and '95. Instead he fought Thomas Tate, Antoine Byrd and a blown up, post neck surgery Vinny Pazienza.
Funny for all those people who say Roy fought bums if you look at the list of guys they showed for Jones to fight he beat all of them with the exception of DM ..
Oh come on, Reggie Johnson was nowhere near the fighter who gave Toney and Collins fits. He actually used to have hand speed almost equal to what Jones would show.
