Wow, what happened there? He was knocked OUT by an opponent with a 50% KO ratio in the opening round. His chin has looked decent in the past, but a lot of good fighters reach a point where glass is implanted seemingly overnight. At this stage, you have to suspect that Steve has reached that point.
Steve Cunningham is like the Marquez brothers: ****-poor punch resistance. Excellent punch recovery. Remember, there are two halves to "chin". :good
To be fair though, with a legitimate count the 'recovery' part wouldn't have looked quite as smart tonight, either.
I agree with that. Cunningham is great at recovering after being down. Tonight his recovery was incredible, with some help from the ref. He was seriously hurt and out on his feet immediatly after. However, I do think his confidence in his chin and overal abilites took a bit of a hit after the war with Adamek.
Cunningham has a good, but not very good chin and YPH has a very good punch. Remember Hernandez also almost KO'd Braithwaite before he let him back into the fight like he did with USS. It should be KO1 anyway, and watch the Herelius fight if you doubt he has a good punch.
Hernandez has a HUGE Cruiserweight punch, but he's so damn timid and thinks of himself as more boxer than puncher. It's so weird. :? (and again, I don't just mean tonight where he was timid after the cut...it's his overall style to be more cautious and work from the outside...)
Cunningham was on his way to a victory imo. Thanks to the smarts of Brother Nazim buying him some time in the corner he was able to recover and take back control.
Oh, I missed this in the OP: Ignore the KO%. As is often the case, it means nothing. Hernandez is among the biggest - if not THE biggest hitter at cruiserweight. KO% can be very deceptive. Vitali Klitschko, with his historically high percentage for a heavyweight champion, isn't even CLOSE to one of the hardest-hitting single-shot KO-power guys in the heavyweight division...maybe not even top 50 all time. Hozumi Hasegawa has a touch of death, but a low KO% because he won so many decisions early in his career.
It was a shot to the temple, you idiot. Jaw has nothing to do with it. Plus, he beat the count, so glass doesn't enter into it either.
Hi there. :hi: Welcome to boxing. Let's go over some basic vernacular, shall we? "Chin" is commonly used to refer to someone's ability to withstand a punch to the head (typically but not as a strict rule landing on the actual chin itself). That's enough for today (and there will be a quiz on it Monday morning). Class dismissed!
