"And that right hand hurt Taylor" "Taylor is stunned, left hook knocks Taylors head up" "Uppercut has Taylor in big trouble" "DOWN GOES JERMAIN" "And Steve Smoger is going to stop the fight" "We have a brand new Middleweight Champion, Hes from Youngstown Ohio!" Then Larry adds "The difference in this fight, one man got off the floor, the other man didn't"
exactly man that woulda sucked balls. Smoger seriously has perfect timing when he stops fights and he actually shows like he cares about those boxers afterwards. Perfect example is the Cotto Quintana fight...He seriously was worried for Quintana, he asked if he wanted to continue a bunch of times and so he let him go on.
You know, I've always been a Bayless fan, but he was off his game in a recent bout. He appears to have gained a bit of weight and lost some agility. I love Smoger and actually like Nady, too, but Cortez should probably back off the big fights a bit. As a rule, I find this is one area where the United States enjoys a significant advantage over the rest of the world.
Smoger is cool because he's not a drama queen, he doesn't want to be the star of the show. He knows boxing is a tough sport and he will allow tough young men to get a chance to fight until they don't want it any more or are defenseless. Some refs act like they are the star and it's up to them to get to involved in the fight. Or they act like they are refereeing a sport other than boxing and they have to prevent a fight from breaking out.
:good just see Cortez in the Hatton/PBF fight. I'm pretty sure he thought everyone was watching to see him get in the action
No issue with either proposal. When it comes to just letting them fight, Smoger is consistently the best high profile ref at this. The guy rarely interjects himself into a fight and never does so unnecessarily.
This thread is ridiculous. Is Steve Smoger entertaining? Sure. But you like him because he has a reputation for letting guys fight even after taking a load of punishment. The guy is SLOW to stop fights. Sure this may make for entertaining fights, but it also makes for fighters getting HURT. If all you care about is seeing a lot of action, and not the safety of the fighters, you're not much of a fan.
