Kelly Pavlik hasn't fought in 7 years. Cunningham fought less than 2 years ago.

One would be fighting at his career fighting weight, the other would be fighting 40 pounds above his.

One is a raging alcoholic who stiffs cab drivers and shoots people with BB guns and the other is the dude who would be fighting at his career weight.

Cunningham would kill him. Total circus fight. Not saying I wouldn't watch but there is no reason other than random nostalgia to want this.

Many great athletes from yesteryear and of recent times have admitted about various degrees of substance abuse during their careers, still maintaining or building to their dominant peak while doing so. Better without it, yes, but far from a cancer (depending on severity). It is not as though Kovalev, for example, started drinking vodka every day after the first Ward fight.

    * Floyd parties. He drinks. He's been seen totally wasted off his ass in public before. He also hangs with lots of people that are known to use coke. He openly likes being around weed... The dude parties, period.

I do remember some gym legends from his prime that Pavlik had badly hurt or dropped cruisers (maybe heavies even?) in sparring...I think his power would carry up to at least CW, and remember that Cunningham was floored a zillion times without even counting his tenure fighting giants at heavyweight: 4x against Glowka, thrice against YPH, once against Ross, thrice by Adamek in their first battle, was hurt a few times and probably would have been dropped by Diablo if not for clinching over a hundred times in total (61 officially in just the rematch), and was on the verge of going down several times against Huck.

Much like a JMM, his recuperative powers and willingness to gut it out are commendable, but his jaw is downright shaky, and he wasn't hard to find with a right cross - guess whose preferred weapon?

    Just saying.

All good points. Not when discussing a match between the two, especially not here in 2019. Don't overthink it.

    :sisi1 Yeah true.

I just can't imagine Pavlik's handlers allowing him to jump right into a fight with somebody of Steve's caliber off such a layoff (and the very word "layoff" here is an understatement) unless they know something we don't.

Of course, I also have no idea who constitutes "Pavlik's handlers" these days. Would he still even have Jack Loew in his corner? The cynical view is that he just has yes-men around him egging him on and hoping to get some trickle of whatever coin he makes for getting savaged.

Last I read it sounded like he essentially disowned him, was the vibe I got. [shrugs]

He is so far gone from lacing gloves up in any meaningful way. His only handlers would be panhandlers. Kelly was truly shot the last several times we ever did see him in the ring. 7 years ago, man.

Pavlik and Cunningham were two of my favorites back around 2010. Good careers to follow. For top dogs, they had their downfalls and were highly vulnerable. I fear Cunningham will be forgotten too soon (not that he's a legend) and as for Kelly, he is one of those cases where you see some highly overrate and others highly underrate; he will have an interesting legacy I will be curious to see a decade and more out.

Pavlik was a Massive MW. He could easily fight at LHW or CW and not be completely dwarfed. Naturally he's a LHW-CW who just killed himself to make MW.
