The Stevenson-Fonfara fight averaged 672,000 viewers, thats down from Stevenson's last fight of 1.3 million against Bellew on HBO.
HBO has FAR more Subscribers than SHO. Not surprising, especially for a NON PPV event where you have to be subscribed to watch.
Both networks have approximately 29 million (HBO) and 22 million (Showtime) subscribers, respectively. With that in mind, the above reasoning doesn't equate to the reason being Stevenson's debut had less viewers.
HBO has 114 Million Subscribers Worldwide http://venturebeat.com/2013/02/06/hbo-has-114m-subscribers-a-new-2-year-deal-with-george-r-r-martin-no-fear-of-netflix/ Shotime has 22 million worldwide, as it's only available in the US HBO has 32 million subscribers in the US
And Stevenson/Fonfara was a decent triple header. I enjoyed the broadcast, except for Charlo/Ota. That was pretty boring.
I don't know why. He showed himself as a straight up average fighter who can't take medium power body shots and was not able to take advantage of a fighter who clearly gasses after the 5th round. What really got exposed is that Stevenson is everything Hopkins said he was. As guy with slightly above average boxing skills with a big punch, poor stamina and a very weak defence.
First, It wasn't only on SHO, but these numbers are only for SHO And second, that's actually true. SHO is only available in the US.
