Because Stevenson needs to be executed by a killer like Gvozdyk. Been a long time coming. Good call by WBC!
Interesting fight. Gvozdyk certainly has the offense to take out the ******, especially they way he can switch stances on the fly. He also has very decent head slips, which will help. However, he doesn't have the greatest defensive footwork, and that coupled with his very short reach means he's in real danger of that Stevenson left hand. One helluv'an exciting fight, if it happens.
Gvozdyk has a long reach, in fact one of the longest in the LHW division excluding Okolie. But indeed he does have to be very careful of the big left hand, especially early.
Actually, yes, even Gvozdyk himself has said a couple of times already that he actually likes the Jack's plan, it's just that Badou Jack didn't implement the plan in full.
Yes, he got hit and the ref counted for 10 seconds instead of the seven or eight he counted with the other guys.
You're correct, my bad. Boxrec has him at 75.5". My notes were wrong. thx. But as you say, he still needs to be careful, as he doesn't quite have the backwards mobility to get away fast. But now I feel better, seeing as he can probably keep the fight at distance, where his lovely head slips will be enough. Stevenson also has damned fine head slips, probably as good as Canelo, so that's a wash. The big difference, besides age, may be Oleksandr's ability to switch hit. He may be able to get Stevenson off balance, and open up some tasty opportunities. - Plus, he has dynamite in both hands, so.... Stevenson is the only fighter I want to see lose, more than Broner.
Would be surprised if it actually happened, but at least it seems that the 5 year WBC 175 belt hostage situation finally comes to an end. I expect Gvozdyk to be upgraded to full champion next month, and we'll see a Jack vs Pimp rematch.
Wouldn't be surprised if the WBC went back on their word and left Gvozdyk waiting for the rematch. The other possibility is Stevenson goes up to rematch Bellew and Gvozdyk becomes the full champion.
