“I can not see how I could have reacted otherwise. I saw that Stevenson could no longer defend himself. But because of the movements of the two boxers and my position, I had to wait a second. I lost my appetite, I lost more than 10 pounds. Every night, I wake up at 4 am with the images of the fight in mind.” — Michael Griffin
Crazy that this happened to the lineal light heavyweight champion in a major title defense. Just wow. I will say I'm no fan of Griffin, I don't think he is a good ref. But he has nothing to feel bad or sorry about his doing in this case at all.
This wasn't his fault at all. Pay attention how he crouched watching the boxers very closely during the last episodes of the fight. He knew his intervention could be needed at any moment. He was ready. And he waved it off without even counting — a good call.
Yup. Ref should feel no responsibility on a professional level. The KO happened very quickly. There wasn't a sustained beatdown.
