I think it can be pretty easy to improve that. It has to do with the way he's been fighting lately. Cotto wastes a lot of energy in his last fights with all the moving and running. He can clinch more if he feels he has to prevent his opponent from attacking, not going from ringpost to ringpost with his back against the ropes. Also, I'd like to see Cotto holding that guard up without being wide open to uppercuts all night long.
steward doesn't have to teach anything new to cotto, he just has to lay out the gameplan and make sure cotto busts his ass in the gym. like freddie roach did with toney and tyson, they wouldn't want to train but he would push the right buttons and make them feel bad and they would come into the gym.
I wish him the best, But adding Steward seems like a built in excuse should Cotto lose his next one.. Just saying.
It certainly can't hurt. Good news for Cotto, and I'd guess that this will open up his negotiations with HBO...then again...its not helping Wlad, so maybe not. Either way, I'd like to see Cotto have 5 or so big fights before he's out the door in good health.
I think adding Steward is a good thing for Cotto. Overall, Cotto doesn't need a complete overhaul, just some tweaking in certain areas to get him back on track. Cotto is an excellent jabber (Manny loves those guys). A master of the body attack (not many of those guys). He also has excellent timing. Cotto just needs to tighten up his defense so he doesn't get hammered by uppercuts constantly, and he needs to use the clinch to nullify his opponent's forward momentum instead of trying to run around and dodge all day, thus wasting his energy (reason Margarito and Pacquiao beat him). I wish Steward and Cotto the best of luck together and I hope this helps Cotto get back on track. I would like to see Cotto in about 3-5 good fights, then hang them up with his head held high.
I don't think Steward is a good trainer for Cotto - although anything is an improvement at this stage from his current situation - but the most important tactic Steward can add to his game is his clinching. But I've read interviews with Cotto where he states that he refuses to add a clinching element to his game on principle, presumedly for reasons relating to machismo. IMO the whole Cotto being open to uppercuts thing has being blown way out of proportion. Cotto has a great resume and no one exploited this so-called flaw until Margarito. You change that guard you change his whole style. The only things lacking in Cotto are confidence, a sense of invincibility, a granite chin and a tactician in his corner and he'll never get those back.
I agree. Steward will strategize more and use more clinches. I doubt this would have helped in the Pac fight as that fight was lost in the negotiations. 145 = 2lbs of muscle lost = no power or endurance and less punch resistance IMO.
That's bullcrap. If he wants to maximize his chances in future fights, he has to clinch. Mosley destroyed Margarito, while clinching more than John Ruiz during the fight. Margarito, Pacquiao and on a lesser extent Clottey gave Cotto huge problems with that type of punch alone. It's not a so-called flaw, it's an important flaw and he has to fix it. Confidence is very important and help from his corner will definitely help Cotto. But I don't think he ever had a granite chin, to get it back.
Steward's not going to change Cotto's 1-handed (right hand) "peakaboo" defense nor is he going to give Cotto a proper right hand.
Steward takes these hard punching stiff mummy types and makes them smarter Cotto can actually move and counter and fare well against types like sugar shane... steward will give him a new mentality as a powerhouse to go along with his talents.
