read this as the reason fighter A got the decison over fighetr B in the General froum

Has anyone ever heard of a fighter utilizing stiff jabs to the body as a part of their offensive arsenal? What merit should jabbing to the body
receive in the scoring of a round. Can a fighter win a fight based on the # of stiff jabs he landed to the body?

I say its Clearly a runner trying to steal a round or a fight and therefore it has no merit, jabs are supposed to be to the head to count
    am I right or wrong?

..ezzard charles used to jab to the body a lot. I never understood that, but i've seen other fighters do it too. just can't think of any particular fight or fighter off hand, but it's worth watching for the next fight we look at.

there are boxers on this forum and i'm sure one of them can come on and gives us a few details.

i do know george foreman often talked about jabbing to an opponents chest...."No way a guy can get his chest out of the way," he said in a few interviews. Of course, a Foreman jab to the chest could knock a fighter half way across the ring, but he's an exception.

It can take the air out of you if a good hard one is landed. It also has the effect of drawing down the opponents guard for punches up top. Its effective

Thomas Hearns also used to jab to the body a bit then fake one followed by the big right hand down the pipe. He threw quite a few jabs at the heart area of Duran.

A jab to the body counts just as much as a jab to the head. If your boxing, usually your main target is to outscore your opponent. If your lucky, you get the bonus and get a ko. I have always been tought to first secure a advantage on the score cards, and then maybe try to knock someone out. If you jab to the body you usually dont get much feedback. I mean the other one will not always move backwards or feel hurt, but it counts in terms of points. so what is wrong with it?

Maybe the worry is that it leaves your head more exposed for a counter shot.
Since you're bent over to throw it, it affects your centre of gravity and you also can't move while throwing it.

Jabs to the chest, depends on the height of the two fighters. It can work well if it's a smaller man against a bigger.

Jabbing to the body should count just as much as anything, but I do think fighters have to be careful with it...it's riskier than normal.

A jab to the body counts just as much as a jab to the head.

In fact, any body shot is equal to any head shot. The only thing differentiating shots should be how clean and how hard they land, so one man's jab could equal another man's hook or cross.

Punches blocked by the arms should count too, IMO, but only half as much. Punches blocked or parried by the gloves should not count.

That's the way I see it.

Oh and by the way, if one wants to see the effectiveness of jabs to the body, watch Mayweather-Corrales.

Your wrong. Charles would do it, Holmes did it a lot against Jones. Its a good way to make them drop their hands or fake them out. Getting hit in the body sucks, and getting hit in the solar plexus is brutal. You take enough shots to the body, eventually you will drop your hands. A good combo is a jab to the stomach and come over top with an over hand right. A stiff jab to the body can set a lot up.

If I remember correctly Richie Sandoval did it quite a bit to Jeff Chandler.

Like many said, a jab to the body is a great way to set up the right hand to the hand. I personally also jab to the body while at the same time side step to the right to stop an incoming attack. The guy will temporarily lose sight of you, while being stuck in the vulnerable area of solar plexus will stop his attack midway. As for exposing your head while jabbing to the body, all you have to do is lean to your right (a la James Toney) while jabbing to use that momentum from your body movement.

Just my .2 dollar. It works for me in fights.
