Still Not Sold on Anthony Joshua

It was round 4 that he rocked Joshua with a nice right hand. I thought Wlad won the 4th round. But he was being out boxed by AJ in those early rounds.

Wlad really didn't box circles around Joshua as some suggested. For most of the fight it was Wlad pressing Joshua and Joshua sitting back and countering. What Wlad did do well was show better ring generalship, which is what you'd expect from a veteran over a novice. Wlad took the centre of the ring and forced Joshua to the edges of the ring for most of the fight.

Joshua isn't the lightest guy on his feet, but moves reasonably well for a big man. He steps to the side a lot but sometimes forgets and ends up being stationary in front of his opponent which is what happened when Wlad dropped him.

When I think of fighters with poor movement, I don't think of Joshua. I think of guys like Ortiz, K.Johnson, Pulev and Whyte. It's something Joshua needs to improve, he's not great at it yet but he doesn't have cinder blocks for feet like the guys I just mentioned. I do think he will struggle chasing a mobile opponent though, he's better when on the back foot looking to counter.

Wlad himself is very light on his feet, but actually doesn't have great movement. He's quicker on his feet no doubt but a lot of the time he prefers to plant his feet and be set to punch. He kind of mixes between the two styles. His speed of foot allows him to get away with being planted so much and he does move so much better than he used to. It used to be his greatest weakness, even more so than his chin.

 

AJ has good speed and exceptional power along with a big frame. In a poor enough division that's enough to comfortably keep him top 5 for however long he wants. Could even be no.1 if he beats the likes of Wilder and Parker but I think Fury beats him.

His boxing ability doesn't look great to me though, nor does his engine. Poor head movement, poor ring IQ, job not exactly great and he's flat footed. With all these flaws you'd expect him to be beaten in the next couple of years but the division isn't exactly stacked.

If I know boxing as well as I think I do. Fury will outbox him comfortably.

 

You don't know boxing as well as you think you do, i bet you are one of the guys who are only watching
the smaller divisions and who are comparing a big heavyweight to a welterweight in terms of ability.

AJ has not poor head movement, he has not a poor ring iq and his jab is good.

And if you think that Tyson Fury will beat Anthony Joshua then it is hopeless to discuss with you.

 

I think it's still too early to say much in terms of him being an all timer. People either bolster him and think he beats everyone ever or they write him off as a hype job. He still got a long way to go, as he said himself but I am a lot more sold on him now, but not ready to compare him to the greats yet.

 

AJ headmovement is pretty good for 250 lbs guy. In fact, after AJ was knocked down, he made Wlad miss with left hooks and right hands. Hardly a poor head movement.

AJ ring IQ is well above average, he made some smart decisions in the ring when he was really hurt, that's not an easy task when you're facing such skilled and strong opponent as Wlad.

AJ jab has improved significantly since his fight vs Whyte and he works on it in every camp.

 

Exactly and only heavyweight newbies like 90% of this forum would say that he has poor head movement or
poor ring iq, in fact, i bet nobody of them could show me a fighter who has or had better abilities than AJ for
his size.

Oooooooh Anthony Joshua! Although it is interchangeable with Anthony Crolla which tarnishes AJ's legacy.

 

Agreed on AJ being underrated movement and IQ wise but its not that far of a stretch to believe Fury (in good shape) could beat AJ. I'd favour Joshua myself but seems a bit petty not to have a discussion with those that favour Tyson, at the end of the day he compares very favourably skill wise against AJ no? this would be a massive fight for good a reason, two well matched super heavyweights.

 

Tyson Fury is really good but Anthony Joshua's style would be a nightmare for him.

Joshua is already a far greater inside fighter and combination puncher than Wlad in just 18 fights ...

When AJ throws an uppercut the world stands still in awe. When Wlad throws one he hits his own face.

 

He has a finishers instinct though, which won him the fight and lost it for Wlad. And since when is being a poor man's Wlad a bad thing? Undefeated dominant heavyweight for 10 years.

 

Finishers instinct ? Lol he fought old and shot wlad , that's what won him that fight

 

This summed up this thread. I didn't see Wlad dance circles around him at all. Actually I saw AJ slipping and ducking a lot of Wlads shots during the period he was hurt until he recovered to close the show. I don't know what fight these people were watching.

No HW has a great enough chin to never get knocked down or knocked out. This is why before the smaller weights took over, HW was always the premier weight in boxing for the most part.

Tbf to joshua he only really has a couple of big weaknesses. Everything else is either ranging from decent enough to very very good. His athletiscm is very very good. His boxing abilities decent. But i think it could be a case of his athletism is so good people will struggle to match him over 12. Because his boxing abilitys decent enough he,ll probably get to them in the end.

I see him losing though...with his style of fighting. Only really takes one good shot at heavyweight. The klitchkos reigned for years but they done it off the back of a massive safety first approach usually using their reach advantage to do it. Unlike wlad joshua exchanges more. I also think after wlad and the whyte fight. Opponents will have a lot better gameplan to work off.

The only real weaknesses i see is the hands come down which looked ironed out at the wlad fight tbf.

Hes too slow going backwards. Hes fine going into an exchange coming out hes slow...it ll cost him. To be fair it wasnt really seen against wlad. Because he kind of fought wlads fight and tried to box with him.

Third ones the biggest...i dont think people have really aknowledged it. Its the one thing that makes him beatable. People are reading it wrong imo. His stamina is actually very good. Its when he gets hurt by a punch it goes south. Plus Physically he takes too long to recover. Its his only big weakness. He,ll beat fury and ortiz. Cant see fury keeping him off for 12 and ortiz takes shots to land his own...not a good idea against joshua. But someone else will beat him...i think soon as well. Probably next 3 or 4 fights. Probably be someone no one really expects. I think wilder will fold against him...but hes got the right style for it. Parker might get blown away...but again hes got a decent style to get it done. Whyte has a decent style for it. The boy breazeale beat recently would give joshua problems. It,ll be someone like that.
