I dont know if this was the best thread to dump this article in but i am sure it is likely to stir the pot and maybe cause the pot to shatter into little pieces when Mendoza and McVey get their teeth into this one.

Jack Johnson claims that he never mentally recovered from the test that Jim Jeffries put him to! The heat and contest apparently finished him mentally (and if you look at his record, it was his last great and serious fight before one of the greatest fighters ever, started taking the easy road and ducking for the first time in his career.

Is it possible that Jeffries really was better performed than we thought and really did take so much out of Johnson. As Johnson (under oath) states?

Given what Johnson was up against in terms of the crowd, it would be shocking if it had not taken a toll on him mentaly.

I have always argued that Johnson declined verry rapidly after the Jeffries fight. This is new to me, but not surprising.

I think you are right. It is just that he was so good, that he lasted so long.

As well as this one i read (but didnt post) an article last night about Johnson viewing the filmed footage of the fight with his wife, for the first time. The third round was where he proudly showed that he opened up Jeffries. It was interesting that the article noted that Johnson appeared to remember the fight blow by blow. It was further interesting that many of the big shots on film that were landed, Johnson apparently said didnt hurt, and many of what appeared glancing blows were noted to really hurt. Giving the impression that the pictures didnt really seem to tell the full story the way they do today (or at least i think they do).

It is fairly reliably recorded that Johnson was sectioned after the Jeffries fight. Some observers at the Flynn fight said that he was not his old self. Johnson considered retiring after the Flynn fight. The biggest irony opf the campaign against Johnson, is that he would likley hav voluntarily relinquished the title had he not been arested under the mann act.

If he had fought Sam Langford after the Jeffries fight point, I would probably make Langford the betting favourite.

How in gods name, are you not at least fascinated by Johnson as a character?
