Well, Rahman deserved the win in the rematch. I think Stiverne was at least as good as that version of Rahman, although Tua was out of shape. And yes it's relevant that Tua struggled to win rounds against a list of fighters who weren't that special.
be that as it may, it doesn't erase the results of the first fight, controversial as both fights were. The guy who beat Lennox Lewis and Corrie Sanders? I disagree. Tua dispatched a prime John Ruiz in 19 seconds, beat future champ Maskaev, polished off Moorer in one round and made short work of undefeated Darroll Wilson just a few months after Wilson handed Briggs his first loss. we also can't ignore Stiverne's defeats to demetrice King and an untested Wilder. Weather Tua struggled against some fighters or not, he still got those wins, beat better opponents than Stiverne and his defeats came against better fighters as well. You can pick Stiverne in a head to head match for whatever reason if you want to... But this shouldnt' be a debate about who has the better resume or legacy.
Stop trying to sound smart. Rahman weighed something like 250+ for the rematch with Tua. That's not the same guy who beat Sanders and Lewis. And no, I don't think Rahman at his best was much better than Stiverne at his best. They're different fighters with different strengths. This thread isn't about legacy. It's just about debating what would be a competitive fight.
Yet Rahman only weighed 234 in the first fight and got hammered. why only mention of the second fight and not the first? Way to ignore all my other points.. And Yes I picked Tua based on more proven ability via his accomplishments.. If you think stiverne's win over Areola ( and nothing else ) elevates him then go with it....
I think Ruiz was still fairly close to peaking and regardless, beating him in 19 seconds was still damn impressive. Nevertheless I agree with you that Tua beats stiverne who seems to have been blown to the stars here.
Yea you got me on my previous post, somehow i thought they gave the 2nd Rahman fight to Tua , indeed it was a draw my memories from that are extremely faded hell it's been 15 years:huh.. As far as the 1st fight goes i don't recall Rahman "getting hammered" at all , BUT I DO REMEMBER , late in the fight, Tua cheap shotted him, AFTER THE BELL, and should have been DQ"d OR Rahman should have had enough time to recover, but it was a close and competitive match till Rahman was screwed over... As far as Stirvene goes, let the guy have 2 more years or so, he lost last week, but i like his grit, and fortitude, and he's got a sack, willing to take on the best guy's and NOT padding his record fighting tomato cans, bouncers, bums, and forklift drivers with 11- 18 records, just so he can keep a. fake ZERO like a lot of guy's in this sport do:tired..
Ruiz fought Tua in 1996, he was too skinny, green, inexperienced, and really didn't know what the hell he was doing, his management sucked should have given him at least another year, before giving him.a fight like that... For what it's worth, Ruiz didn't peak till around 2001, 2002... The Ruiz that beat Rahman, Holyfield, and Kirk Johnson would have given Tua a helluva lot bigger test than the 1996 Ruiz...
Both Rahman fights with Tua were controversial and in truth, Tua probably should have lost both. As for Stiverne I don't know if he has two years left in him. He's 36 now and has only been appearing on an average once per year since 2012.
I think it was still a good win from the standpoint that both Tua and Ruiz were viewed as young up and comers. That fight was one of three bouts in a prospect showcase on HBO back in 1996 which I saw. Golata fought Nicholson and Briggs was stopped by Wilson on that same evening.
At this point in time I would have to go with Tua because he has the better resume and Stiverne did get hit much. Time will tell what kind of puncher is Wilder and what Stiverne does from here on.
Tua by KO. Stiverne goes to hospital to get the bones in his face checked for breaks... Why do people rate Stiverne so highly? Ive never really seen anything special in him. I mean, how many times does he get hit clean? PLENTY! Against someone like Tua who had such powerful hands & likes to fight with styles like Stivernes, it would end terribly.
That's what I was thinking. Wilder isn't in Tua's league in the power department. Stiverne would do well for 5-6 rounds but the Tua hooks would take their toll. Tua wins by ref stoppage
