Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but how can anyone simply disregard Ali, Marciano, Pep, Duran, Benny and Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Monzon, Foster, Salvador Sanchez, etc etc and just say today's are simply better? This ain't no modeling contest based on looks or muscle mass. This is like saying Brady, Manning and Bonds, Mcguire, and Sosa would of **** all over Montana, Marino, Starr and Ruth, Williams, and De Maggio.

Vitali better than Ali? Are u serious? Pep past his prime was still able to beat a murderous punching Sandy Saddler and to say he wouldn't even be competitive today seems like you don't know what you're talking about. Alot of people buy into the undefeated records and the hype without even following a fighter's career. How r u supposed to make me believe Floyd is a better fighter than Duran, Leonard, much less Robinson with victories over Hatton, Castillo, Delahoya, Corrales and could not even ko a featherweight like Marquez when Sugar Ray Leonard who beat all time greats like Duran, Hearns, Benitez, and Hagler was able to knock the **** out a light heavyweight when Leonard was way past it? You can't. Not all the gnc in the world will make u the greatest. It takes balls of steel and a heart of a lion for that.

i dont think enough people really watch the old fights and understand the differences , certainly the likes of Joe Louis , Gene Tunney Jack Johnson were great natural athletes and were the best of their day , how do people think modern boxing is where it is today , because someone in 1992 had a new way to train , NO!!! . Boxers of old knew how to box , fight , and fighting as often as they did especially the lower weights meant diet , training and rest were just as important as today , the past is where it is history , but please repsect it.

It works both ways tho, what if we compare Joe Louis to John Ruiz, its the individual fighters more than the era they fought in that is the REAL difference.

What a ridiculous thread. Obviously heavyweights have gotten larger over time, but as a boxer, judged purely on talent and technique, Joe Louis is as great a boxer as you will ever see, in any era. Dempsey, Johnson, and the other guys from the very early part of the century were certainly rougher around the edges, but boxing was still in a transitional period at that point and hadn't settled into the current ruleset. By the same token, however, Gene Tunney was a fantastic boxer by current standards and he fought at the tail end of Dempsey's era.

Besides guys like Juan Urango or Carl Froch are doing great things for the sweet science in this era.

Im gonna replace Dempsey1238s ridiculous statement about Pac having the tools to beat SRL with this ^ beauty on my signature because quite frankly, this tops it.

I SERIOUSLY thought you were being sarcastic towards the thread starter until I read further & seen more of your posts.

Yes, seriously, he just can't be ****ed arguing with these dudes any more and plays an extreme version of Devil's advocate. He will follow up though, he doesn't break character.

This is awfully depressing. What am I in some sort of twilight zone or something. And the majority of people are buying and clapping their hands eating this up! WhataRock already laid the foundation for what was wrong with the post. Not to mention the specifics about Armstrong not throwing many punches (To put it into perspective, he was the LW/WW pioneer Joe Frazier, except two-fisted), Johnson only throwing 6 punches and Pep and SRR not being good enough for today. Crazy.

He ****in had me believing him.

Dam... that would have been one of the best quotes of all time in a comedy kinda way if he was serious, looks like dempsey still holds the honours... but the general is just the place to replace his ****... no doubt

This is a great post. Newspaper worthy. Good job. I do believe someday (if they cannot already) they will be able to with a computer program match fighters up from different eras and have a result. I am not sure how accurate that will be since if Jack Johnson did fight Holmes, he probably would of raised his hands up- but in all likelyhood a right hand by Holmes and Johnson is on ***** street pretty quick. Again, a very good post.
