There in lies the problem, though. Floyd Mayweather is undoubtedly set for life financially after his past few fights. He should never again have to worry about money in the slightest.

His legacy, however, is not yet cemented. There are still numerous doubters, whether justifiable or not in their arguments.

And, at the end of the day, long after Mayweather has hung 'em up, who will remember all the money he made? Who will care how many cars he has in his garage, how flashy his lifestyle was?

Now, how many will look back and watch film on this most skilled fighter, how many will judge the man on his legacy?

Don't get me wrong, though, Mayweather will make quite a bit of money if/when he fights Cotto, so let's not make it out like he'd be fighting for free. I think there were rumours of it being held in Yankee Stadium and filling it to capacity...need I say more about that issue?

So, I guess it comes down to if Mayweather really wants to be remembered for his prowess in the ring, for being one of the greatest of all time, or just a man who made a lot of money...

honestly though what are the chances that floyd loses?

not in 12 ... only way hes losing is a ko

and even if he does lose that means part 3 will be that much more exciting and the cotto fight will always be there..

and you act like some of the other all time greats never dabled in boxing.. there was an article on espn about it..

living like me or you floyd set forever
living like floyd... is another case

and momentarily put yourself in the shoes of someone who knows nothing about boxing..

obviously floyd is the #1 dog right now... who else (keep in mind that you dont watch boxing) is awaiting to challenge floyd?

trust me i deal with people like this everyday who think floyd is unbeatable and have 0 clue about cotto

No if Dela Hoya pulls the upset it spoils it. Right now it would be unbeatable vs a machine. If PBF loses what would we look foward to .... he would have already loss. PBF is defeating himself.

walk wit me- good thread. i've been getting pretty sick of the Cotto/Mayweather hype as well. Especially since all of Cotto's fans are crazy about the demolition of a b or c level fighter (gomez). I think we should all be happy to see cotto cleanin up the division since mayweather has no interest in doing so. by the way... what school do u go to? FAU? or r u in high school still? j/w cuz i have friends in boca.

Who the **** else should care about Cotto other than the PR community and Boxing fans? Aliens from outer space? Or perhaps the WWE wrestling fans should all know who Cotto is too, or maybe even the people who are dancing with the stars fans? Or should Cotto have to be on the level of a DLH to be considered a "draw". Cotto hasn't gone out of his way to make himself a cross over star, I don't think he cares to go THAT MUCH out of his way to be a "cross over" star just so ******ed morons that watch 1 boxing fight a year "know his name". And by going out of his way I mean:

Crying after defeating a C level fighter and threatening that they're going to retire, And saying that they will only continue fighting if its against DLH

Actually fighting DLH then saying he will retire unless its a rematch.

Then joins Dancing with the stars

Then contradicts himself by fighting Ricky Hatton, who is a fighter that is Known by the UK community (much larger than PR..lol) and boxing fans.

Then Joins the WWE for wrestlemania

gets into a "scuffle" with 50 cent? lol.....

And is lined up to rematch DLH in a worthless fight.

I'm NOT shitting on Floyd at all, its SMART promotions (or desperate) and he has done everything he can to get his name out there. Will Cotto go out of his way to do this? Never.

swing4thefence- then its not meant to be i guess... i believe its impossible for oscar to beat floyd

cdvandy- i actually go to lynn (little school next to fau)

jecxbox- no doubt cotto isnt going to do all this... but what did oscar do to become such a cross-over star?

if floyd only desires to make big money fights now... let him be..

a time will come within a year in a half where it will be absolutely mandatory for floyd to fight cotto.. so until that time comes lets talk about

    calzaghe - bhop
    shane - zab

    and whatever else lies ahead

Cotto vs Mayweather would draw way bigger than a Hatton vs Mayweather rematch, in the US and probably a De La Hoya rematch, I think Hatton's stock will continute to fall, while Cotto's is just rising and at a fast rate, many Americans loved Hatton but didnt think he had a chance against Mayweather, its different with Cotto.

Oscar lets see.. He may not have went out of his way, but his fame came more naturally.

He obliterated the mistique of JCC Sr.
He is also Mexican American Born in Cali - so not only did he represent Cali but he also went in as a Mexican and destroyed Mexico's hero not once but twice. That is an automatic LOCK to have a HUGE fan base just by being in that situation. And by fans I don't mean like nuthuggers or supporters, By fans I mean anyone that buys his PPV to see him fight.

2ndly, Oscar has a Great great action style and it is a very crowd pleasing style. People like to see speed, but people also like to see the KO's and Oscar brought that to the table.

3rd, Trinidad and Oscar were on a collision course, and Tito being Puerto Rican and Oscar Mexican they were going to basically seal the deal with a MEGA fight to continue the Mexico vs Puerto Rico rivalry. Believe me when I say this, but every Puerto Rican Trinidad fan will buy the PPVs to every single DLH fight! DLH not only had fan success for being mexican - AMERICAN, but he pushed himself into the door in mexico itself by killing their hero in JCC AND DLH became a house hold name to every Puerto Rican because of the Trinidad fight. For the most part Puerto Rican's that religiously watched Tito fight would also fork out 50 bucks to see DLH fights.

4th, The guy was every little teenage latina girls imaginary dream husband, he goes and tries a singing career, and now is married to a Puerto Rican and lives in PUERTO RICO and has a ****ing puerto rican son lmao

Oscar has played his cards VERY VERY well, BETTER than Floyd has. Yeah Oscar and Floyd broke the PPV record but believe me that was mostly Oscar, and Floyd was the perfect guy to hype a fight with. BUT believe me If Trinidad vs Oscar would have been Promoted the same way Oscar vs Floyd was it would have produced MORE numbers than Oscar vs Floyd.

right but he didnt take the floyd route

    -talking aburds amount of ****
    -24/7
    -dancing with the stars
    -nba celeb all star game
    -wrestlemania

oscar did it by just doing his thing in the ring and being humble.
the same thing miguel is doing right now

Yup but, Oscar was just way too fortunate.. For Cotto to be on those shoes, he would have had to come up and some how destroyed Trinidad the way Oscar destroyed Chavez, which wouldn't have happened. Theres just to many variables that won't ever allow Cotto to reach that kind of fame. Fighting oscar 1 or 2 times would DEFINITELY help.

I mean lets put it this way, If Floyd would have never fought Oscar, And Oscar opted to fight Miguel not once but twice. Who would be the bigger PPV king between cotto and floyd? Cotto easily would be miles ahead of Floyd. Anyone that fights oscar in a EXTREMELY well promoted fight and beats oscar is bound to push into crossover support.

    i agree somewhat....

oscar put floyd in the light.

but when floyd was in the light he flourished....

the **** talking, the excessive spending, "making it rain", having roger in his corner...

he just took it to another level with his antics and everyone totally bought into it
