Max Baer was a tremendous fighter. He was an ATG puncher and had an impressive physique. A solid chin and an overall great fighter. Besides Joe Louis, anyone who beat Max Baer was lucky. I think he'd be a reigning champion today. Let's recognize the marvel that was Max Baer!

Sadly he did not have the mentality of a warrior, which is needed for boxing. He was too inconsistent on training and too goofy in the ring. One of the best talents to ever grace the ring imo.

Out here in Sac. We have a park named after him. What more can you ask for? His son played Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies.
    WINNING!!

I respect him what he accomplished in his era but I don't view him as great. I watch film of him with his hands down throwing one punch at a time and lifting his back foot up when he throws his right hand and wonder how he ever was a champ. Some how he made it work for him. I don't begrudge anyone that disagrees with me but if he was around in the 60's, 70's or early 90's he wouldn't have gone far in my opinion.

He'd be formidable in any era. I think if he'd existed in the early 90s, He'd have been Riddick Bowe's worthy rival instead of Evander Holyfield. We'd be talking about the Baer/Bowe trilogy.

He certainly hit hard with the right hand. I have watched a lot of his fights and am just not sold on him. He seems somewhat one dimensional to me. I respect your opinion though.

I consider him an overrated puncher.

Was never impressed with him. Looked pretty good against Schmeling although he fouled the crap out of him with back hands. Id take Schmeling in a rematch.

Very limited fighter, but man one of my favorites!

Excellent puncher with excellent chin. That's quite rare combination.

Have him on around the same level as Witherspoon. Strong fighter, who if he takes a fight seriously, is a real danger.
But blew big fights for whatever reason.

If Baer got anywhere it would be because of his chin and power.

Why is it always Baer? Schmeling would do much better today, and he was a dedicated cool guy to boot.

    I don't understand the obsession.

Schmeling isn't liked on this forum. A shame because he was outstanding fighter with the best win in HW history.
