The more fights I watch, the more I see a scary willingness to stop fights early to save hometown fighters from potential losses. Two that spring to mind just in the last few years... Early this year Finish prospect Amin Asikainen went against Yory Bory Campas in, you guessed it... Finland! Amin's now ranked the 10th middleweight in the world peeking at Boxrec. He definitely isn't a bad fighter. But anyway, Campas had him ready to go more than once throughout the first 7 rounds. Then, Amin gets him reeling back against the ropes, and instantly... The fight's stopped! No prolonged punishment, Campas was never off his feet... Nothing to warrant a stoppage. Campas raises his arms, protests to the incoming referee, and seconds later is walking around with a giant disgusted grin on his face. Poor Yory.
How about David Haye vs. African Fighter Lolenga Mock? Very obscure fighter, Lolenga, and Haye faced him in only his 7th contest. Bad idea. Taking advantage of Haye's ridiculously low left, Mock hit him with a gorgeous hook. Haye goes down, and barely gets up at the count of eight after wobbling on the canvas. Seconds afterwards, Haye reels forward grabbing onto Mock and friggin' powerslams him onto the canvas. This buys Haye quite a bit of time as the ref gets them apart, slowly. Later on Mock almost knocks him down again. Haye eventually lands one of the hardest uppercuts I have ever seen on Mock. Vitali/Lennox Lewis type shot. Mock goes forward a bit into the ropes with Haye, falls over... On the canvas Mock is already half off the canvas. He untangles his head from beneath the bottom rope. He easily gets up, brings his gloves together. No wobbling. Ref stops the ****ing fight. Crowd goes wild booing. Even Haye looks embarassed.
What really pisses me off about the Haye/Mock fight is that Mock is a SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT. That's his actual, normal weight class and after such a ballsy, good showing against the best Cruiserweight of the last some odd years he gets screwed out of so many things by a bull**** hometown call. Mock's chin was tested in a dozen other losses against some other divisions hardest punchers at SMW (Never off his feet against Bute over 12 rounds even though Mock lost all 12 rounds on one judges card) Mock also went the distance with Cruiserweights Lasse Johansen, Jesper Kristiansen, Kai Kurzawa, and Giovanni Alvarez. He's a SMW with a chin tested against a collection of friggin' Cruisers and he got screwed.
Weeeell, where I agree that was a bull**** stoppage, I couldn't say Campas was waving his hands at the ref to stop him coming in, he was all over the place. Campas would have been better to take a knee and an 8 count to recompose himself as he had only been stunned by a couple of shots just previous to the stoppage. But anyway, agreed something has to be done and these refs have to be held accountable and the option to overturn decisions should be there, the Joe Cortez debacle with the Soto / Lorenzo fight being a clear example.
Andy Lee-Brian Vera. Lee lands a punch an then the ref stops the fight Lee had not been down (though Vera had) and was leading on the cards. Sickening.
if it's a prolonged beating then i think they shoudl stop it. if it's just a turn aroudn they should be given a standing 8 count. anyone against the standing 8 count rule?
Dokes vs. Weaver I. Weaver did say he got hit with a good left hook, but was still on his feet defending himself as best as he could. And yes, while I am aware that fight took place four weeks after the death of Duk-Koo Kim, Weaver wasn't hurt that badly, and was doing a decent job defending himself. He straight up got ROBBED in that fight. Worst stoppage ever.
Lewis-McCall?:huh Lewis gets dropped, gets up, and as the ref is observing him, Lewis stumbles foward with his legs not under him........ ......what type of an assinine referee lets it continue, after Lewis trying to prove he's allright, stumbles foward only to be held by the ref who is right in front of him? In fact thats a prime example of a career saving stoppage by a ref. Had the ref let it go on, there's a great chance Lewis would have gotten badly hurt and never been the same fighter again. .....the ref legitly stopped it, and Lewis went on to fight at a very high level afterward!
The ref hadn't even reached the full count. It was for the heavyweight championship of the world (well, the WBC version) and it was the second round. If that had been a British boxer knocking down, say, Muhammad Ali and the fight was stopped because Ali wobbled a bit as he got up, it would go down as the worst stoppage in history. Which is a shame, because the worst stoppage in history is Dokes-Weaver I.
Lewis was out of it. Even against Cooper - Clay got up and walked straight to the corner. He wasn't wobbling all over the place. Lewis probably deserved to continue and give him a chance but i think he was out.
I don't think he was any worse than Larry Holmes was once or twice. Whether he would have cleared his head as quickly as Holmes and certain others did we will now never know.
