Straight body punches, are they underappreciated?

Today I was sparring, ive only been boxing for a year so im still a novice but I have some skills haha this guy was slowly started to push me back further, but I managed to slip a jab and hook the body with a left, I could tell it hurt him as he grunted and stopped pressuring, so I bided my time and gave him a solid jab to the solar plexus, boxed for a few seconds, hard straight right to the solar plexus, exchanged for a few seconds and another straight right to the solar plexus on the ropes. He was out on his feet and backing off ready to be dropped with 1 or 2 more body shots but the coach said time.

I have never really been told to go for that shot as part of a gameplan, but it seems like the solar plexus is underappreciated as a fight stopper. Admittedly I tried it against a pro in my the next round I sparred and it never worked but he is well conditioned, so do you use these punches often? why are they not used so much? I dont often see pro's stop fights with these or even throw them, only hooks to the body.

The risk is that you get countered to the face. That being said... I will punch someone's Pectoral region as they jab. I don't have to get as close as I would to reach their head... and sometimes jab to the body to try to set up something... normally a right hand.

If you read the accounts of old fights, way back, the straight right hand to either the solar plexus or the heart was a fight finishing punch. And straight right hand under an opponent's left jab is a natural counter, not to mention a very damaging punch when timed right.

I jab and throw straight rights to the body all the time. Usually with success. I'm not a power puncher, so I haven't finished anyone with it. But definitely do some damage. You just have to remember to bring your head and hands down with you, so you're not leaving your face open - i.e. simply punching downwards.

It's really hard to hit someone in the solar plexus hard with a straight shot.

I always go with the straight right to the solar plexus as the first shot when I get into a fight outside the ring, but in the ring I prefer to jab or hit straight rights to the head or a left hook to the head. But the straight right to the solar plexus is good but the upper cut to the solar plexus is the best because it really digs in.

Body punching , in general, is underappreciated...especially at the amateur level.

    ^^^^ THIS!!

A lot of fighters do punch to the body with straight shots, it's not unheard of. In fact most coaches/fighters will tell you to aim lower, neck/chest region, with your shots to counter-act head movement. Only downfall occurs when your technique is lacking and you get countered by going to the body with these type of punches.

Try this one. Left jan to the head, follow with straight right to solar plexus, follow by a left upper cut to the chin. OR. Straight right to the solar plexus, follow by a left upper cut to the chin. Good chance that your opponent won't see the left uppercut to the chin. Definite knockout potential.

I think Andre Ward does this quite a lot.

Watch what Chris Eubank has to say about the straight to the body. It's an easy punch to execute, and if done properly will keep your head out of range of a counter and cover your chin.

I don't ever throw my left (southpaw) to the body as a straight punch, but I frequently jab to the body. With full extension and my left hand up, its a low risk high reward punch, just gotta watch for the lead hook.

like the thread starter said, ive noticed this can be effective, if only letting ur opponent know to be careful charge forward.

Do you combine this with an outside slip then straight right counter, inside slip or a drop/duck??
