The Philly shell defense is the toughest to crack in boxing if a boxer hasn`t been trained proper offensive fundamentals, take a look at the techniques and strategies that have historically troubled what some have described as the most puzzling defense in boxing.

“Philly shell” isn’t real. That style has been around forever since the bare knuckle days, the old bare knuckle guy responsible for Archie Moore and Charley Burley would probably tell you he stole it from someone who stole it from someone and so on.

Oh hey I wrote the scripts for both of those videos. AMA.

Most people credit George Benton with its popularity. He was army boxing coach after getting drafted into Korea. But the techniques have been there forever
I call it the Philly shell because it's what people understand that defense is called these days.

Generally speaking a mixed attack that prioritizes the body is a good start taking a defensive guy out of his game.

It's harder to get out of the way of body work.

I have in previous videos. I have to work with a hard word count so its inevitable some stuff gets cut. I have had a few arguments about the clickbait titles FWIW

So-called crude Max Schmeling used it all the time, but nobody raves about his defense...

I have seen Sam Langford using similar technique once, as you said it's as old as the sport.

Yes, that`s how Usyk will have fight Fury because his head is so hard to catch.

Do you think the shoulder roll is effective?

On the whole, absolutely. Its poison to guys who love the 1-2. Key is knowing when to abandon it if your opponent starts doubling up on the same side.

I honestly don't think I've ever heard anybody call Schmeling "crude".

I've never heard any one I'd consider reputable call Schmeling crude.
