I could imagine Tua being tough to get off his feet because of his low centre of gravity, and tough to grip into a headlock because of his thick neck, and in-close grappling he can turn into his short shots.... Yeah, Tua.
Do you think that size is as important in bareknuckle street fighting as it is in gloved fighting. In theory, a smaller fighter would hit harder and be likely to do more damage without the Pillows. Do you think that someone like Roy Jones Junior who would hit most heavyweights 5 to 1 on the first shot would have much better chances without gloves, than with gloves?
Agreed. Street fighting isn't a sport. There is no bell and it is rarely fair. First in usually best dressed.
I don't know why smaller guys would hit harder absent the padding. And studies surprisingly show minimal difference in impact in different glove weights.
Floyd was a teenage hoodlum and thief raised in poverty after having moved from North Carolina to Brooklyn. He was preternaturally quick and powerful, in addition to having the opportunistic mentality that comes from privation. I'm sure he was plenty good in a street brawl. Another I would mention is Vitali Klitschko, a guy who grew up in a family of 5 in a one room **** hole in the decaying Soviet Union (their apartment was about 200 square feet), who excelled at multiple martial sports. His father was often gone on Army work and Vitali was the man of the family. He's just a guy who has the air of someone you don't want to **** with. Jack Johnson, a veteran of Battle Royales, who grew up in Galveston in the late 19th century as a black man and possessed great physical gifts and will. Tony Galento look at a picture of him. Nuff said. Pretty much every trained pro fighter is a bad guy to mix with. They have no hesitation in delivering the first blow and little fear of taking return fire. True street fighters don't **** talk, don't posture or strut; they deliver the maximum damage initially because that wins.
A good heavyweight with bare fists would KO a smaller fighter with very few blows, and the head shots would inflict gruesome damage. Size still matters outside the ring.
Patterson was a severely introverted youth who spent his days playing hookey because he had only his Father's old clothes to wear to school. He hid in storm drains and was a petty thief out of nessessity because he came from a severely deprived background. His thefts and withdrawn behaviour eventually led him to being put in a special school called Wiltwyck, it was the saving of him. He never mentioned street fights in his story. Floyd was no hoodlum, and temperamentally unsuited to the, take umbrage, be first mentality, instant reaction of the successful street fighter. Jack Johnson had lots of street fights and was not averse to punching out civilians who got up his nose,he laid out a gang of London taxi drivers who decided he was too uppity. Scotland's Peter Keenan was undefeated in scraps on the cobbles, he once faced down Sonny Liston who was on a UK tour it was over smoking. Keenan refused to put out his cigarette which Liston had objected to, saying, "the only thing going out will,be you and by the windae", it was smoothed over and the relatively tiny Keenan ended up sitting on Sonny's knee impersonating a ventriloquist's dummy. There's no mystique about street fighting as I'm sure you know. Its just a question of hit first ,hit hard, and keep hitting, until there's nothing left in front of you to hit. One of the favourite weapons in UK pubs, the heavy ashtray has gone with the non smoking rule, there's a few lads in my town with impressive scars on their heads caused by those.
An interesting story, Liston to me was a genuine bad ass and not just a bully as some make him out to be. The only time i've read that Liston showed any fear was during the car journey with Ronnie Kray
You are wrong though. I would not rank Floyd among the best street fighters. He is a boxer not a puncher. He is a counterpuncher and not an agressive boxer à la Tyson or Chavez. 1. Tyson 2. Dempsey 3. Young Foreman 4. Liston 5. Joe Frazier ....
All other things being equal the bigger guy has the advantage. Why? Because he's taller, heavier and he has a longer reach.
Because that is a load of bollocks, i've had street fights with guys much bigger and stronger than me and i've wiped the floor with them Sorry the size bull**** doesnt work with me. You might walk into a bar and see a guy with big muscles and be intimidated, but not me.
