"Now what happens when the pushers get tired? Their punches slow down, their footwork gets sloppy, their movement falls apart. But of course, they don’t see this as a sign to improve their technique. They blame poor conditioning, or not trying hard enough. The next thing they do is train even harder to have more energy to WASTE! The reality is that conditioning will never compensate for poor technique, it only prolongs the inevitable. Ultimately, you will get tired because of the way you move." -Expertboxing

    :hey

I'd be interesed in learning the details of what he does.

But I feel where SJS19 is coming from. He's a regular Angelo Dundee (check out his training tips tutorial if you eve get a chance). You can't really go wrong when you're training the body to box and do nothing but box so help you Greb.

Whilst there are scientific aspects of the sport boxing is an art, all the plyo in the world isnt going to make you a world beater. Sparring is the single most important part of training imo & always has been.

I'm not sure modern nutrition is especially effective, except for helping guys cut ridiculous amounts of weight.

First and foremost, it depends on the quality of the S & C coach. Do they understand the sport? Do they know what will benefit a boxer? Do they know the workload of a boxer and how much recovery they need to perform more intense sessions throughout the day?

I've had experience with an S & C coach who had all the ideas under the sun, some very good ideas. Boxing related? Not really. Benefited the boxers for their bouts? Not really.

I think it can be vital for certain boxers (especially in the pro's) but not to the point that they are a key element up until fight night (for certain boxers anyway). Sometimes you just can't beat good old actual boxing.

:rofl Nutrition is nutrition dude, it's an exact science basically. If you need to sacrifice good nutrition to get to a weight division you're not doing yourself any favours.

A Strength and Conditioning coach might add 2% or 50% to a fighter, depending on how lacking they are in certain areas.

Boxing skills, technique and tactics are all way more important to a fighters success than a S+C coach. But that extra 2% from a S+C coach could make the difference.
So like with every other athlete in the world, yes they are needed.

Ofc they are needed.Boxing trainers are usually old school boxers thereself who resent and dont know **** about weights, any form of resistance training,plyometrics,SAQ,endurance,flexibility..etc etc.Dont let me go on periodization, overtraining and nutrition.
This is 2012,waking up ev eryday at 5 am and doing 10 miles on the asphalt isnt good for anything or even healthy btw.
EDIT:The myth about boxers ate slowed down while doing heavy lifting is absurd, just look at the olympic style weighlifters, they are the most explosive people in the world.Mistake here is from ym knowledge, boxers caming to the gym asking advice from bodybuilders, and ofc getting moronic advices at the start.

Miguel Cotto has s&c coach,Phil Landman. He covers all the s&c at his base periods as well as nutrition.
Although as i saw from 24/7 diaz has some good knowledge about specific and situational boxing s&c,even measuring lactates in the breaks and coordination trainings and plyos.Great trainer.

Any professional athlete in a highly physical sport this day and age NOT using a strength and condistioning coach is an idiot.

This isnt the 1950s anymore, speed, strength, endurance, explosiveness are all massively useful to a fighter.

Every other sport has moved on leaps and bounds over the last few decades, its only obvious that boxing moves on too.

Prett much every boxer worth his salt has a s+c coach.

It can't hurt. In this day and age of advanced science, our understanding of the human body is much more deeper. So why not take advantage of this knowledge?
