I thought this piece I came across was particularly relevant to the discussion, especially considering the fact that Virgil Hunter is considered more of an old-school type of guy. Great read so I recommend it for anyone interested in the subject (I'd post the text itself but I can't.)

Thats a bunch of ****ing bull****.
You can hear him talk about s&c coach like they are bodybuilding trainers, that doesnt make any sense at all.He didnt say,hey look at Cottos performance at 154,look at Manny when he listened to Ariza and didnt have leg cramps.Look at chavez jr.Look at evander when he made hw.Spinks and etc etc.
Its not the s&c coaches fault that some fighters accepted the fight on some ridiculous catchweight!
Who told miguel cotto to come down to 145 to fight pac? That was such a stupid decison,he could barely made 147.And for that fight he had that amateurish trainer-Joe Santiago.
Or Dawson to come to 168?He made supper mid last time in 2005 year, right? So now he come back to smm in 2012,thats insane.
I heard the de la hoya stupid diet, yea that was awful, but thats just one case.
In amir khans case,s&c coach cant make him have better defense or chin,so what now his losses are the fault of alex ariza right?
And than he mentions the old school fighters, you cant compare those days to this.
So i should go running 5 miles every day in army boots cause Marvin Hagler did it,lol if someone did some stupid **** back in the days and was a champion, that doesnt make it right.
Boxers who get "disorientated" and rebellious are getting that way because of the wrong system they have been working on from when they were children,so yea if u get a boxer who was running every day at 5 pm 5 miles and you tell him he shouldnt do that, ofc he will question that even if you do explain it to him, cause he was brainwashed by some ****ing moron who hasnt got a clue about strength and condtioning.
That reminds me of a boxing coach who has told me earlier this year that i should run every day 5-8 km.And than i asked him why?He just stared through me and didnt know what to say.So i should take conditioning advices a from some dip**** who doesnt know anything? And mind u a lot of them are like this. Sports science has come a looong way, and to not read, see and try some different stuff and just do the stuff old ways is criminal.
And btw i did finish kinesiology with specialization at S&C,and am boxing as well.
This kind of articles dont make sense at all.

i think s& c should be done in the down time between camps for fights. that is when to really work on it. less time boxing, more time improving strength, explosiveness etc.
then in the 8 week camp for a fight it should be little weights imo, just enbough to maintain your previous improvements
at this point it should all be about conditioning and technique

12 rounds like hatton used to do on a body bag
12 rounds made up of sprints or 400 metre runs
12 rounds made up of intense pad work

that sort of thing which improves a fighters engine imo.

and then dozens of rounds at a non intense pace working on technique with sparring drills and then actual sparring.

Isn’t it a good thing that Banana’s are hard to digest? Doesn’t that mean you fell full for longer and the energy is released slower so you have more energy available?
