Read what I put, idiot. It works brilliantly FOR ME. I think it's rubbish because it works for me. It's a thing of the 80's, IMO. Many athletes stretch before they workout.
Yeah and thats exactly why you are an ignorant tosspot. Because it works for you everybody else has to be wrong right? What makes you any different? Also don't you think things might have come along a bit since the 80s? :blurp
So what has come along that replaces stretching? Doesn't it help with tight / sore muscles after exercise? Or just in general like lower back problems and or to help recover from injuries as part of rehabilitation? After I have a massage, the therapist more often than not says you need to stretch more in my hips / hip flexors / hamstrings. Should I not bother?
I was specifically referring to stretching *BEFORE* exercise. The general consensus these days is that it's not a good idea to do so. Check these out: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22692125 http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/34/5/324.full http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22316148
No it doesn't help with sore/tight muscles after training, it can make DOMS worse and stretching a tight muscle is like pulling on a knot. Lower back problems are associated with decreased stiffness, you don't want movement through that region. There is no evidence that stretching prevents injury , improves performance or helps with DOMS. Lifting weights has proven benefits in all those regards as a side note. Massage therapists are usually alternative quacks that have no clue.
Rubbish. I know for a FACT that stretching has helped me massively. I also know that if I never did it I'd be stiff and injured. Just go to the gym and look at how the front delts on most men are pulled in (even Starret say's this). Lack of stretching! Lifting weights can help massively, I'll give you that (plenty of back work for a shoulder impingement helped me massively), but to say that stretching has no place is crazy. And you're a poster that I really like reading the opinion of! :good
I do a load of olympic lifting, and as a progressional warm up i do overhead squats, and I absolutely have to stretch my front delts and pecs beforehand. I am a great believer in dynamic warm ups, but stretching, likewise, is a must for me pre-full speed training. And as for the ****ing idiot saying stretching doesn't lengthen the muscles, go tell that to the British Olympic gymnastic coaches and be prepared for a lot of laughter headed your way.
No doubt its boring, but to say you get no benefit from it is total nonsense. Theres a reason you'll see any amount of videos online of S and C coaches stretching the Mayweathers, Pacquaiaos, Lennox Lewis etc
Agree with your "dynamic warm up" comment. :good Quick question: I can't seem to "catch" the bar on my clavicles when I attempt a C&J - What do I need to do to make this happen? And how can I make myself more flexible in this position? I get as tight as a scouts knot when I'm in there.
Well it does help me so I guess I'll carry on, but what does make you more flexible? Are saying lifting weights will make me more flexible?
There can be several reasons why you're not catching the bar correctly if I understand what you're asking, is that probably you aren't dropping low enough to catch, or that you're struggling to get your elbows high enough, and that too may be flexibility. Try doing hang clean and see if you still have the same issue, if you do it may be your not extending properly with the hips. The stretches that work best for me are found on kinoyoga or something on youtube(she's an absolute darling too by the way). I also warm the shoulders dynamically with a bo staff and bands too.
