Strikeforce's Brett Rogers meets "Warpath" Villareal at Oct. 23 W-1 event

Strikeforce fighter Brett Rogers (10-2) will meet fellow heavyweight Ruben "Warpath" Villareal (18-18-3) at an October event in Canada.

The W-1 MMA organization hosts the show, "W-1: New Ground," on Oct. 23 at the Halifax Forum in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The organization recently announced the 11-bout fight card for the show, and a Strikeforce official confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Rogers received permission to compete at the event.

Rogers looks to rebound from a pair of losses – the first of his career – that came in a pair of high-profile Strikeforce bouts. In a highly anticipated and CBS-televised event in November, he suffered a second-round TKO loss to Fedor Emelianenko. Then in May, he suffered a title loss to champ Alistair Overeem via first-round TKO.

Prior to the defeats, Rogers went 10-0 with 10 stoppages via strikes. All but one ended in the first round.

Rogers now meets Villareal, who's competed with organizations ranging from Strikeforce to KOTC to Gladiator Challenge. The seven-year pro recently saw his three-fight win streak (his longest since starting his career with a 4-0 mark) come to an end with a submission loss to Strikeforce/EliteXC vet Mike Cook.

Despite a sub.-500 career mark, Villareal has fought a who's who of MMA notables, including Ricco Rodriguez, Don Frye, Antonio Silva, Bas Rutten, Dan Severn, Paul Buentello and Tim Hague.

While most of the undercard is filled with Canadian fighters, "The Ultimate Fighter 11" cast member Jamie Yager (2-2) also competes and takes on fellow middleweight and undefeated Jeremiah Hamilton (6-0) on the W-1 card.


This is why i like SF. They allow fighters to get paid. Not much of a bout admittedly but Rogers has a chance to break bread.

 

Who's overrating Rogers exactly? Whats the difference between his and Carwins record?

 

I dont think theres many that have Rogers anywhere near the top 10.

Again i ask whats the difference between him and Carwin? Both have beaten a number of cans both have a win over a former UFC champ. The main diffrentiator here being Rogers appears to be the better puncher as he has more KO's on his ledger.

 

Because Beebs says so? Your bias towards wrestlers is farcical. There is NOTHING seperating these two as fighters when you look at their respective competition and yet you have nothing but venom for Rogers who has 2 losses to 2 of the best heavys in MMA. When Carwin fights Fedor or Overeem come see me.

 

Rogers would do nothing of the sort. He's striking is he's only asset because he's heavy handed. Thats pretty much where it ends. He doesnt have the experience or background as a legitimate striker in any discipline. Carwin is exactly the same. Albeit he has a wrestling background that we havent seen much of in the UFC.
This huge chasm in skills is clearly a figment of your imagination.

 

This question can be levelled directly at Carwin. Have you seen he's wrestling in the UFC? I sure havent. Is he known for his wrestling in the UFC? Is he known for his ground game in the UFC? Is he known for his top control in the UFC? No No and No. You can argue the toss about his "wrastling" skills till you're blue in the face the fact is Carwin is a KO artist who likes to stand and trade and has this advantage because of his size and strength ( pretty sure the hormones must have helped too...) Dont believe me? Watch Lesnar Brock again. Matter of fact watch what Carwin did in round 2 from his back. **** all.

 

Id more than likely put my money on Rogers via KO.
