With a fair few good fighters in the UK currently, I would be interested to hear other people's opinions on the strongest (and weakest) divisions domestically. Feel free to include/exclude world champions as you wish, and let me have your thoughts. I would say the strongest three are as follows: 1. Lightwelter (140lbs) 2. Cruiser (200lbs) 3. Feather (126lbs) Many will be surprised not to see welter on there, but in my opinion, not many of them are all that cracking to be honest. I was tempted to throw in heavyweight at 3, as they are all reasonable fighters, but the lack of entertainment given within the merry go round rules it out I'm afraid. Your thoughts please.
Your first 2 divisions are the obvious choices. Depending on which division you class Calzaghe in, could you also add either Light Heavyweight or Super Middleweight to the list due to fighters like Woods and Froch. Obviously this would be a division ranked at best 3rd. I expect Haye to beat Enzo convincingly at the weekend. After this happens the depth of UK talent at Cruiser will be significantly reduced - especially if Haye does then move up.
Lightweight has Khan, Thaxton and probably Arthur too by the end of this year so its looking quite strong
I think it depends how you assess strong. If you mean world champions and possible title challengers then the Cruiserweight division is high but when you look past Enzo and the soon to be moving up Haye the division looks abit weak. If you are wanting divisions stong in depth of good quality fighters then light middle and middle look good even though we have no big title holders. My list. 1. Light welter. Two world champions and Rick Hatton as well as the current European champion Lynes and the likes of Ajose Olusegun, Barry Morrison, Bami, Barnes and Daws. It certainly makes an intersting top 10. 2. Middleweight. Obviously no world champions but a very good list to choose from. Eastman, Elcock, Lockett, Paul Smith, Macklin, Barker and McDermott are all very good fighters plus we have a few good up and comers in a division where it looks as if everyone has the beating of each other. 3.Welterweight. This division much like Middle is good in terms of depth. Obviously Anderson has a lot to think about but you still have McIntyre, Watson, Mutley, Jennings, Matthew Hatton (Ricky again maybe), Minter, Doherty, Brook and many others, we have about twenty good guys there.
Lightweight is a decent division I must admit, in hindsight there is probably more depth at cruiser, though the leading fighters at 135 are inferior to those at 200.
:huh Depth at cruiserweight? Where? After Haye and Enzo you have Mark Hobson 27-5-1, Rob Norton 29-4-1, Tommy Eastwood 13-3, Tony Moran 14-6 and John Keeton 26-16. That does not look too great really. The lightweight division looked good untill Khan came about and made them look poor. Fair enough decent opperaters but after Khan and Thaxton it does not look too great any more. Hopefully Limond will come back and liven it up abit and the winner of Murray vs Fewkes could cause a stir. I like our Featherweights, a cracking bunch especially if Micheal Hunter gets back on form and stays fighting there. He could make it very interesting for Cook and Derry. Im looking forward to Simpson vs Appleby too. Does Choi count as a domestic fighter? I would like to see him fight one of our top guys.
We've got 3 champions at light welter and not one is the WBO, a very rare thing...PLus guys like Colin Lynes who must be nearly top ten if he's not already there! Cruiser is the next best. Takes a bit of a dip after that...erm....super feather/lightweight will get a bit tasty after a bit Khan/Mitchell/Arthur/Harrison/Rees (arguably)...could be good...
yep...for strength and depth it has to be light welterweight. three world champs and the european champ! and then a number of other quality domestic operators. the cruiserweights may have two world champs, but look beyond them and there is nothing. the next best after macca is hobson. say no more. i like the look of the middleweights also as there are some great prospects coming through. welterweights are strong but domestic level. superfeatherweights are good as well.
It gladdens my heart that we are even in a position to dicuss the best domestic division, what times for UK fighters these are. Rule Britannia right enough ! :good
