'47 is looking damned good. Joe Louis Gus Lesnevich (even though Charles and Moore were top contenders and never got the shot :verysad) Rocky Graziano Ray Robinson Ike Williams Willie Pep Manuel Ortiz Jackie Peterson Pretty ridiculous year
Louis, Pep, Ortiz, Robinson, Williams with Charles and Moore top contenders in one year is actually ****ing insane. :nut
1923: Fly: Jimmy Wilde Bantam: Joe Lynch Feather: Johnny Kilbane Light: Benny Leonard Welter: Mickey Walker Middle: Harry Greb Lt. Heavy: Mike McTigue Heavyweight: Jack Dempsey McTigue's a weak link, but the rest are gold, with Lynch admittedly rating a level behind the others, while still being a very good fighter.
1972 HW: Joe Frazier LHW: Bob Foster MW: Carlos Monzon WW: Jose Napoles LW: Roberto Duran FW: Clemente Sanchez BW: Ruben Olivares FLY: Erbito Salavarria
Or 2001? Lewis Jones Hopkins Mosley Castillo Barrera Austin Morel and Lopez, Mayweather and De La Hoya held junior crowns!
2013 - Heavyweight - Vacant - not unified Light Heavy - Vacant - not unified Middleweight - Vacant - not unified Welterweight - Vacant - not unified Lightweight - Vacant - not unified Featherweight - Vacant - not unified Bantamweight - Vacant - not unified Flyweight - Vacant - not unified Not a single unified champion. Quite depressing really.
This is quite likley the year with the greatest number of active profesional boxers in North America. While McTigure is indeed a weak link, he was clearly not the best light heavyweight in the world at the time.
What about at some point in the early 80's? Not sure who was Champion in each division at what exact time but Sanchez, Arguello, Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Hagler, Spinks, Holmes, Pryor and Gomez were all champions at some point.
Flyweight: Santos Laciar Bantamweight: Pintor/Chandler Featherweight: Sanchez/Pedroza Lightweight: Alexis Arguello Welterweight: Ray Leonard Middleweight: Marvin Hagler Lt. Heavyweight: Michael Spinks Heavyweight: Dokes/Weaver The Heavies are the only weak link. Otherwise that's stellar.
