Have you ever seen coaches do really silly or say stupid things. I hate it when you see coaches slapping pads into boxers fists. I also heard a coach reccommend a young boxer maybe about 11years old to block punches with his forehead.
In a fight when they see that their boy is getting a beating, and they just yell and shout and not even think about throwing in the towel.
Coaches like people in general, are not immune to being stupid. Worst kinda coach though is one that figures he knows it all and can't admit when he is wrong or made a mistake. In another thread I mentioned about fighting hurt. The reason for that, was that I had trained my ass off, for months for a set of fights coming up, and before my Saturday fight, I was to rest completely after Thurs. No nothing, just complete recovery and proper eating. He wanted me at the club that Friday anyways, for us all to meet before hitting the road. So then he decides we should do pad work. Trusting his judgement, I had one of the longest padwork sessions I ever had, and had a guy holding them wrong the whole time. Woke up the next day and could hardly move. My back was completely screwed. Then on the road we go to fight. Get there and am telling him, but no way I ain't fighting, so I rest all I can and plan to stretch lots and just go for it. He decides to pad work me right minutes before the fight...all out. Ended up fighting a guy 6'4" or 6'5" and I squeaked a win out, as he was lacking a lot of skill. But I should have destroyed him, and if he was good at all...I would likely have gotten creamed. Not only was I now hurt, but my coach just sapped my best round of energy from me with the intense prefight hard work. Anyway, point is...he made a mistake. He realized it. We discussed it, and I won't ever do that **** again.
Blocking punches with your forehead is a throwback to the bareknucke days. The forehead is an incredibly hard part of the body and if you sort of headbut the guy's fist with your head, they will probably hurt their hand. It's a cute trick, but you don't want to do it too much. Doing this frequently when your opponent has gloves is a quick way to brain damage. Maybe you could do it to a guy with hand probllems, but I would not highly reccomend it.
I actualy remember Bernard Hopkins saying that he was going to use this method against Joe Calzaghe due to Joe's fragile hands
It happens. I've seen coaches show up at the last minute only to find out they aren't even registered and the kid has to scramble to find some stranger to do his corner for him. I've also seen coaches kicked out in the middle of their kids match because they were drunk.
