Another thing that I think is STUPID that many don't see a problem with is guys tapping gloves as a form of sportsmanship before sparring. STUPID. You can go to youtube and find tons of clips of guys in fights getting knocked out because they got suckered when they should have their guards up. So I fail to see the benefits of getting into this habit. The timer has rung, get to work. I think that if you're up there moving around in the gym and the guy you're sparring with puts his glove out, the acceptable responses are to ignore it, shake your head, or preferably, fire off a quick jab so you know it's time to work, not play patty cake. You can shake hands and backslap before the timer starts or in the case of a match, AFTER the fight is over. Anyone else agree with this huge peeve of mine?
haha, well it is not a peeve of mine, and I too have tapped gloves before the swinging began. BUT, I have also seen a guy get KTFO in the first second not expecting to get hit and looking for a tap. It was actually hilarious. We have this cross border rivalry with a club, us Canada, them the U.S.A. and a fellow club member did that to a guy he has fought before. All of us, including the ref were kinda going..."Holy ****!....Can he do that? Well I guess he can, and I guess he just did!" lol was funny as fuk.
People that walk into the gym wearing affliction shirts. Saying I'm going to be pro and ****.... They last one week at the most.
hmm i disagree about the glove tap in sparring. as long as its not a real fight (ie. am/competition fight), theres no reason not to glove tap as a mark of respect for your opponent and to remind yourself that what happens in the ring, stays in the ring. if your mate hits you with a straight right, doesnt mean you should do the same after. i think it just signifies the fight's beginning, and you leaving your friendship outside the ring.
I agree, I see nothing wrong with tapping gloves before sparring. It is, to me, just showing sportsmanship and respect. Nothing to get wrapped around IMO.
It's fine in the gym I suppose. But it is considered illegal in a bout, the ref will call you on it. It bugs me because it's just another thing that clueless guys do to imitate the pros.
THANK YOU! What some people dont understand is that sparring is done to improve your technique, not to build your ego.
this kid same age as me were sparring, got pwned the first round, the second round came by he held out his hands to tap and then slammed me with this overhand right and then went ballistic on me... weird humans
People who stare at you thinking they can take you just because you got your ass handed in a sparring session. Then when they find out you compete, all of a sudden they act cool towards you. Pussies.
People that don't get out of the way when I enter the gym with my posse and then stare as I shadowbox to eye of the tiger. Even worse, those that complain when I go ballistic sparing. That shits for real dude. I don't hold back. Except for the tap at the start of each round. Oh yeah, and the gym needs to have equipment laid out for me when I get there.
You make a good point, but it's something I've always done. It's good in sparring just to indicate you're starting (as we don't always have a buzzer), to remind yourself/your partner that it's a spar and not a competitive bout - which is important. It's not sportsmanlike to take advantage of it even if you know better, tbh. Having it as a marker of the start just helps me get in the zone, really. Problem is that you really have to remind yourself not to do it when you're competing, not just cos the other guy may take advantage but because it looks sloppy. I really disagree with your point, the more I think about it.
I get annoyed with people who get too much pride out of telling people they box etc, it's annoying. People should be more humble
