I think Sturm must be one of the most overrated boxers today. His style is so amateurish it is painful to watch. This "your turn, my turn, your turn etc." with the plan to win through tighter defense (just gloves, no movement whatsoever) is so primitive it is a disgrace to the noble art. Perhaps I'm exaggerating a bit, but Sturm was just so unimpressive. I did have Sturm winning, but by the smallest of margins, and exactly only because he in the you hit, I hit etc. slug-fest did have the tighter glove-defense and more precise punches. So Sturm only won because Macklin was even more primitive in there. These guys showed no foot-work at all. No head movement, no upper body movement, very little punch variety and so on. Just hooks, hooks with the occasional uppercut and jab. I'm sure oppinions will be divided as to the quality of the fight. Some fans like a pure evenish slug-fest with no movement and just hitting all day long. Personaly I prefer to see a much higher level of skill... (which, for example, means that I enjoyed Calzaghe-Kessler much more than Kessler-Froch because it was fought at a much higher skill level). Anyway - disappointing fight and both men have no business being in a World Championship fight imo.
Didn't bother to read that ****. If you couldn't appreciate a fight like that, you're a ****. End of.
'Anyway - disappointing fight and both men have no business being in a World Championship fight imo.' it was a fight of the year contender
Absolute bull****. I was very impressed with Sturm's ability to pull it back and thought he landed some really good shots, and he ended the fight throwing, so well done to him. The absolute bull**** that is spewed on these boards after a close or controversial decision is ridiculous. Show some ****ing respect for a change.
I guess you didn't like Corrales-Castillo, either. Or Gatti-Ward. I like to see level of skill too, and I also am not that impressed by drunken brawls like Kessler-Froch. But tonight we saw two guys maintain a really good pace with good, solid traffic of combinations. None of them were throwing wild swings whilst plodding from one end to the other. They were throwing some sweet shots to both the body and head. The fighters themselves may not be elite, but they put up a very entertaining fight for what they could muster. And for that, they deserve massive props - especially Macklin.
Good fight, but FOTY? Not in this year, it's barely in the honorable mentions with all the great fights so far. And being a robbery loses it some points too.
Corrales-Castillo was fought at a very high skill-level. Just a lot of punches and a lot of infighting.
You are right. I am not a great fan of Gatti-Ward for example. I much prefer Toney-RJJ and many other fights. The same for soccer/football, while some people prefer hard tacklers like Maschiano or Koeman, I much prefer the technical geniuses of Messi, Laudrup, Zidane etc. Tastes are different. But I think it is so disappointing to see two guys taking turns at hitting each other without any skill or movement. Someone in an old thread (that was brought up again today) suggested that Sturm may be able to beat Hopkins at MW because "Sturm is a superfast two handed boxer, and Hopkins has trouble with two-handed fast boxers like RJJ and Calzaghe". Huh? This slow, primitve slugger..... compared to Calzaghe... or RJJ..???
Its not fight of the year. Macklin's never held a title and Sturm is just an average belt holder. Need a higher standard of boxing. Sturm fights nobodies, never taken on a big name in the division. No one has even heard of most of his opponents. It wasn't a great fight for Sturm, a contender with zero top level experience just beat him. In the first half he was walked all over. Sturm as a boxer is OK nothing more, should try fighting a decent world champion.
