I just got a question... I've been training with my Dad and Brother who both used to box, for about a year now( as in they have been teaching me the basics for about a year, they both boxed for longer than a year...), my style is a lot likle Sweet Peas(of course no where near as good, but thats what its most like, if its like any) I am a slick southpaw about 5'5 130 lbs.

I want to know if boxing like this is going to get me laughed at if i go to a gym and do it. My dad taught me the basics, but my style strays away from them a little bit. Is it best to practice the basics and perfect them till i get a real trainer to tell me what he thinks would work best for me, or just do what im good at right now, and see what happens... Ill be going to the gym at the beginning of next year.

Good question after 754 posts on a boxing board.

Personally, I would keep my hands up if I were you and box the right way.

    I'm gonna tell you this.

If you're going in the gym, keeping your right hand low, the trainer is gonna put some tall guys in there with a good jab and right hand and tell them to punish you.

You're going to find out that you have to adapt your style, depending on your opponent.

Even Floyd puts his hands up when his opponents get in his grill and have a size advantage.

Chances are you're going to be fighting on the inside a lot more than you'd like to, so it's a good idea to learn fundamental boxing.

That means keeping your hands up. That's the most important part of boxing.

Also, jab when you go inside.

Or at least throw a punch. If you don't jab or throw a punch, you're going to get smashed with some right hands.
