Replace Tyson with Liston, against the exact same opposition in the same timeline. For the sake of argument, give Liston the best possible trainer and assume he's operating at a peak level.

I think Sonny steamrolls older Holmes and Douglas, and beats Evander. I think he wins a tough fight against Lennox Lewis in a late round KO. How do you think it would play out?

Liston wasn't exactly the paragon of consistency. How long did he hold on to his belt?

    He'd do worse overall.

Maybe Ko's Holmes but more likely Holmes takes a decision behind his slightly superior jab, Ko's Douglas, but I highly doubt he beats Evander for many of the same reasons Mike didn't. Holyfield isn't scared of anyone and it turns into a war that sees Holy step up and upset Liston IMO.

It is an absolute garbage post,he not just losses badly to holyfield , lewis and probably douglas, but i suspect that guys like tucker could have beaten him, liston is an overrated garbage

That's a bit harsh. Liston vs holmes is a tossup with the possibility of a liston KO, other than the otherworldly Tokyo Douglas it's a one sided beatdown in Liston's favor. Holy probably gets the better of him and there is absolutely no shame in that.

Liston was stronger than Holyfield, could fight well on the inside and had superior reach and the hardest jab ever. No way Evander beats Sonny at his best.

If Holyfield went into an all out brawl, Liston would win that shootout.

I think Holyfield would probably infuriate Liston on the inside not only with his headbutts but his shorter sharper punches and he was also quite good at slipping jabs to get there. Though Liston's jab was incomprehensibly long for a man of his size it was also quite slow. Quite like Foreman's jab but a bit faster. Holy's entire plan was to slip it and make the man pay for throwing it. He could probably do it to Liston too.

No way a rusty 38 year old Holmes stands a chance against a prime Liston. A peak Holmes, yes, but not the 1988 model.

Fair enough, I forgot to take the year into account. Especially coming of a 21 month layoff like he did vs Tyson.

Yes,actually 88 holmes was heavier and stronger and he has good chance to beat liston, tyson was a nightmare for holmes cause he had great speed (liston could not even dream with it), he was a better more accurate and explosive puncher than liston,he had much better defence, better chin , was better finisher,in few words liston was garbage next to tyson

Exactly. Tyson had no inside game, Liston had plenty of it. Liston would be an entirely different opponent.

Laugh all you want, but fact is Ali faced a washed up unmotivated old Liston, and by Alis own admission he was out on his feet at one point. Ali also said that fight was his greatest test.

Prime Liston would have KOd him
