Subriel Ahmed Matías Matthew vs. Jonathan José Eniz, 10 rounds @ light welterweight

 

Round 1

Matías is walking Eniz down with the left jab (then right, after switching to southpaw), but then having to shell up and grind to a halt as Eniz jumps in and shaves at the face with his own upward-peeling southpaw jab, and then fires volleys of uppercuts into the chest and lower mandible, all of which Matías is able to catch on his tightly bundled forearms. Matías is looping a left into Eniz's right ear as he ducks in attempting to shoeshine the stomach. Matías is picking off right jabs in the pocket of his left mitt, and brushing aside hooks with a reverse waving motion, like swatting a fly. Eniz is managing to duck and sneak in quick right hooks on the flanks of Matías, just below where his bent elbows rest as he shells up. They clinch and infight a bit, and Matías straps Eniz with a couple of lefts on the way out after the break ordered by the ref.

Subriel Matías is the second fighter in action tonight who just this year (both this past summer, in fact) had an opponent die of injuries sustained against them in the ring...

For him it was Maxim Dadashev in July, and for Carlos Adames (who lost a UD to Patrick Teixera on ESPN+'s card a couple of hours ago) it was Patrick Day in June.

 

"El Potro" Eniz has a 24-12-1 record, but has only been stopped thrice. Kid's tough, and game.

 

Round 2

Matías is ripping left uppercuts into the body and slapping hard with the right hook upside the head but not dissuading Eniz, who ducks and leans his right shoulder in toward Matías, barrel-rolling at him to barge down the front door and unload his body combos, or shoot a rocket straight up into the bottom of Matías' chin. Matías playing the role of counter-puncher, loading up and taking aim, landing some BOMBS on Eniz, yet the Argentinian keeps driving through and getting off his own shots. Commentators repeatedly say "wow, wow wow WOW!"

Round 3

Matías is advancing cautiously, wary of this fearless sparkplug (listed as only an inch shorter on BoxRec, although I'd bet it actually is at least 2-3). Eniz is bracing himself with arms folded at diagonals over his chest and face as he shimmies in & bodies up against Matías, then whips out body hooks with both hands and climbs his way up to slash at Matías' chin. BIG left uppercuts by Matías, pounding Eniz hard in the sternum, trying his best to puncture a hole through Eniz's breastplate! Eniz going nowhere, just ducking & weaving in the pocket, and flurrying wherever he can find an opening.

Round 4

Matías is clinching a bit now as Eniz seems to be wearing him out (from Matías having to hit the guy in the head so many times with no effect, and then shell up and dance away from his return fire). Matías is muscling his way in, drilling his right elbow into Eniz's ribs to back him up a half-step and then planting hard left uppercuts into the breadbasket. Matías loading up on single powerful body shots and just flicking a weak right jab walking forward. Eniz dancing, dipping, ducking, and slipping shots all over the place, worming his way in, holding Matías, wrenching on his arms, then obeying the ref's break, hopping backwards, alighting on his toes and leaping in with a superman left hand between Matías' eyes. A tricky bastard with an Energizer bunny tank, is Eniz. Just ducking, flurrying just above the belt with light straights, jumping out, and leaping in with more of those line drive lefts at the head. Matías looks flabbergasted.

Round 5

Matías is pumping the left jab now, with authority, almost angrily. Matías intent on not letting Eniz dictate the round's narrative with his awkward, bouncy rhythm. Matías steamrolling him, jabs in his face, hard straights downstairs. Matías being held and just waiting for the ref to intervene rather than waste energy shaking himself loose. Matías now touching Eniz with almost every jab, scouting his erratic ducking and swerving movements and locating him with the left fist wherever he may roam. Matías landing plenty of chopping rights, some of them incidental rabbit punches as Eniz bares the back of his skull ducking in against him. Matías walks him into the ropes with a series of short but hurtful left and right uppercuts. Eniz trying his damnedest to clinch now, then breaking away with a bump of his chest against Matías' and swinging big clapping lacrosse-stick punches up top, all easily walked through by Matías. Eniz tries and fails to hold as Matías pours on a fresh batch of power shots at the head. Uppercuts and overhands, and Eniz takes a knee and then falls to a seated position against the corner turnbuckle, and rides the count.

KO5!!!

 

Props to Eniz for being such a difficult pain in the ass, but even more so props to Matías for solving the puzzle and getting rid of him (becoming just the fourth person to stop El Potro in 39 bouts).

 

Matías switch-hits very deftly. Smooth operator, I sometimes barely even noticed until a round ended that he was boxing a different stance than he did when answering the bell.

He does the Dempsey/GGG "shift". (crisscrossing his legs while mid-jab from mid-range into the pocket)

 

That actually brings me a lot of joy, to see Matías chatting amiably with the interviewer at ringside, laughing. This had to be therapeutic, getting out there and doing what he loves in front of a sympathetic crowd, getting a positive outcome, and being surrounded by so much love. He isn't going anywhere.
