Educate me on this man please. I know he's Manny Steward's nephew who's been around the kronk gym since he was a kid. I know he trained good fighters like Chagaev and most notably Adonis Stevenson. I don't know much else about him. What I want to know is; how highly rated is he among boxers and boxing fans? What attributes is he known for and is he a good trainer for Tyson Fury? He appears a tight lipped trainer and it's hard to gain an insight into his training philosophies. Thanks in advance for any replies.
To be honest I think Ben was a good trainer and seems like a very decent guy but he did lack the experience ... Anytime you watched them working the mitts it was the same combinations every time and I believe there was truth in what Freddie said about any corner instruction he heard being given ....That being said I’d be curious also to know what Sugar Hill is like, he does seem very low key and not really a horse play kind of guy which is what Tyson needs.... February 22 will be here soon enough so we’ll see how the change works if at all as it’s not really a whole lot of time and how the corner is run.
It's all very intriguing isn't it. Fury made an interesting point that all of his previous full-time trainers were rookies. His uncle Hughie hadn't trained anyone at a good level before Tyson. Same with Peter. Same with Ben. So ironically, Sugar Hill is easily the most experienced full-time trainer Tyson has had. He doesn't seem egotistical or a big talker anyway. I think he's very wary of Wilder's power which is a good thing. He seems old school and technical according to Andy Lee which I think is good for Tyson at this moment in time. I hope so anyway.
It will be interesting to see, because I feel Tyson needs the discipline and needs to learn new things to keep him focused.
Despite Emanuel Steward's cerebral. almost academic approach, the Kronk was known as an absolute slaughterhouse of a gym. Errol Christie never recovered from the time he spent there when he found himself in wars every single day. Dennis Andries was the only other Brit who tried his luck there and thrived on the toughness of the place. I'm convinced that Fury is going to much more aggressive in the re-match and I think the move to Hill is a piece of this.
I think it comes down to what Freddie said, he said Fury was trained to be safety first and he wanted Fury in the later rounds to attack Wilder and go for the KO. Instead ben kept telling Fury to go on his bike and "keep doing what your doing". I have no doubt if Fury in rounds 9,10,11 went more aggresive he may of wobbled Wilder more. In the 12th round he had wilder and should of emptied the tank right there which was what freddie was saying he was telling ben to tell Fury go for it now, but instead instructions where to survive and move.
