Sugar Ray gets a street in Harlem named after him

You might have trouble finding anyone to meet your lofty standards for street names.

 

I always liked "32nd Street." Has a nice ring to it.

 

Of course they do. That's too obvious to require mention.

Like I said a couple times, it's their party; they wanna name it after him, fine, go nuts. I personally do not think athletic skills alone are enough to warrant admiring a person that way. Admire their ring skills all you want, I just think it's silly and shallow to worship a shithead the way many seem to.

 

'Bout damned time..he should have gotten a street before Adam Clayton Powell, that's for sure..

 

I can assure you, in case you haven't followed my many posts about Monzon over the years here at ESB, that my avatar of Monzon is in support of his legendary fighting career and not his sordid domestic life...but I see what you mean.

 

A fighter's personal life shouldn't have any bearing on his in the ring accomplishments in any way..

travis ****ing simms has a road named after him (and his brother) for community work. and they have done nothing in equal measures to robi. all your doing is muddying the waters man. sugar did alot for harlem. enough said really.

Anyone trying to make some point along these lines need simply read my posts here since 2004. I have never hero worshipped him or suggested anyone name a ****ing street after him. If you doubt this, go look and do the research instead of assuming simply because I have his name in my avatar and happen to be a fan.

Your not wrong to feel that way. I understand exactly what you mean. At the same time Robinson brought a little more than just athletic skills. He was a pioneer in certain ways as a black man in the 1940s. Sugar Ray established buisness along an entire block of Harlem. He was tough with a dollar but at the same time donated entire purses to Cancer Research.

He also carried himself in a way that was uncommon for a black athlete even one that great. He was cocky at a time when black athletes really couldnt be. Ofcourse Ali took to much further with the **** talking.

Point is I believe Ray Robinson meant alot to the Harlem community more than just his wins or his boxing record.

 

You assume wrong. I'm a little surprised at how defensive you're getting. I wasn't trying to make any type of sarcastic point. I was being dead serious. That's what I've read, probably in a thread involving his career. I'm not a saint and therefore don't care to make judgments of other people. I honestly just don't care enough to go digging into these fighters' personal lives. I've got my own. Boxing is the greatest competitive sport in modern history to me, it's an outlet of entertainment. I worship (loose term) skills and ability, not people for what they were as human beings.
