"You have to deal with the hands you were dealt," said Leonard.

"You can't please all of the fans, all of the time. There will always be someone that will say you should have fought someone.

"Joe Calzaghe was supposed to be an easy opponent for Jeff Lacy to annihilated and that was a huge, huge upset for the boxing critics and historians and even myself and I didn't think Joe could beat Jeff Lacy.

"But the way he choreographed the fight was so impressive

"And even though Roy Jones was past his best, he was expected to beat Joe with his handspeed and knowledge.

"Joe has proven himself and beaten everyone that people claimed he couldn't beat with class - and that is respectful.

"Joe was a special kind of fighter."
    -Sugar Ray Leonard

No he wasn't, what a load of rubbish. Calzaghe was a absolute red hot favourite going into that fight.

Interesting how he left out Hopkins because he knows Hopkins was cheated in that fight

Plenty of people were tipping Jones to win due to his speed and heavier hands at 175lbs.

lot's of people predicted Jones would win. People seem to forget these things so quickly just because Calzaghe destroyed him. Hopkins, Froch, Lennox Lewis and Glen Johnson to name just a few. People's views have changed so quickly just because they got proved wrong. A classic example is Froch. He was adament Jones would win, then when Calzaghe beat him by some distance, only then does he start saying it was a mismatch.

Or maybe he thought Calzaghe would win.

Seems like the fights he mentioned were the ones where he picked Calzaghe's opponent.

  10. I was pretty sure most thought JC would beat Jones by a lanslide..... Some ppl wanted to try an think Jones had a chance but in reality it was just to try an legitamize the fight

It was more out of hope then expection on here yes.

Why the Pro's thought different, **** knows.

Apart from Froch, he's a bitter ****. Obvious his reason.

Roy Jones was most definitely not expected to beat Calzaghe.

very few people thought roy would beat joe... joe was a heavy favorite and for good reason, roy was way past him prime.... in retrospect its easy to see how he beat lacy, but at the time that was not what i expected. im not the biggest calzaghe fan, but sugars right, he was a special fighter

RJJ was never expected by anyone to beat calzaghe, the same jones who was brutally koed by tarver and johnson

ray leonard never mentioned how calzaghe failed to ko jones
