Just leading on from the discussion thread, I fancied a poll to get opinions. Both on which if either of them could make all time P4P lists and also just, who was greater?

Both No.. Ray gets in if beats Duran in I and beats Hearns in II, a fight in which he was very lucky to get the Draw, imo .. other than that he just didn't have enough fights for me.. Roy gets in if his Resume is a little better, taking on more risk and fighting some better guys and is successful, and retires after Ruiz or Tarver II, even with the loss ... As it stands now Ray higher up than Roy on an all time p4p list for me

how is Roy top 10 all time great. he avoided tough fighters, and after he lost to Tarver he took more chances and was 50/50 in wins. or less against handpicked. Ray is an all time great in top 10. . Look up Duran, Hearns,Benitez,Hagler.

Roy had impressive skills, but he did not have them against the kinds of guys which top 10 would need.. This is top 10 ever. you need a resume of wins against other greats.

I'd put Ray Leonard somewhere around number 15, and Roy Jones somewhere around 30.

If Roy had been as cavalier in his prime as he was in his later career, there'd be little doubt, one way or another, about his standing in boxing history. It's been said that a fighter has to dare to be great and on that basis, Roy just wasn't daring enough when it really counted.

Roy Jones never had a rival like Ali and SRL did in his prime to really
challenge him and so prime RJJ never faced adversity. However i
suspect RJJ would have beaten anybody at his best he was that fast
and good. However because of this i have to rate SRL ahead of RJJ.

He didn't have the greats Ray had, but Ray thrived on that . Roy was a great fighter and dominated guys. But Ray would box guys and spot the weakness and go for it. Ray was more of a great fight fighter than Roy. Hearns was also a great fight fighter. Floyd and Roy are more win the decision and dazzle, but not fight a great fight.

Yeah, exactly, and that's another level of greatness. It's not just winning, but how you win that matters. The comparison between Roy and Mayweather is a fair one, although I feel Roy went a bit further than Floyd in terms of going for the win. When he needed to, he went to the extra gear (I'm thinking of the Griffin rematch) but a lot of the time he didn't need to because he didn't have the opposition that could really take him to it.
