He did look fabulous in the closing moments of that match. He made Lalonde look ugly towards the end, and it was probably the last time that we saw a galvanized Ray Leonard.
That was classic case of a fighter moving up in weight who looked so much smaller than his opponent. Leonard never done too well from the outside as the rounds progressed. It was a fight where his brain was ticking into overdrive and waiting for the right moment to step inside and strike. He had been dropped, stunned, and was hardly dominating Lalonde up until he forced the stoppage. His killer instinct was as good as it ever was.
Showed his best power (a left hook) vs Davey Green...... Put Hearns away who despite what some believe is mighty durable & he did it to both body & head. Leonard wasnt as good a 1 punch hitter as Hearns but he had very good power that demanded respect & the accumalitive affect of his punches, mainly because of his accuracy was really effective. :thumbsup
I must admit, Leonard would KO Morales, just too big & powerfull. Ps. I would take SRL to TKO Whitaker over 15 rds or UD over 12. :good
Leonard had more than the Battersea power station. Lorry loads of power. Infact, rumour has it he was going to change his name to Sugar Ray "Power" Leonard. Heaps? Thats an understatement.
Ray was a beast with a killer instinct. I'd feel sorry for the welters to middles if he was around. I'm a Hearns slappy also.
Even though he injured his hand, Hearns could not stop Benitez over 15. No magtter how late it was, Leonard did, and as we know, Benitez was as cute as they come....Leonard broke him down and stopped him (to prove a point, he didn't need too, he was ahead on PTS easily) In his day, Leonard could bang. Lalonde was forced to drop down in weight though it was still an impressive stoppage considering how far into his career Sugar Ray was.
Leonard Benitez is one of the worst, most needless stoppages ever. Amazingly enough Benitez didn't seem to care.
