Sugar Ray Leonard v Wilfred Benitez

2 weeks is what i remember hearing.after reading about it at the time i was expecting to see a close fight......but it wasn't

Having a jolly weekend I presume? Have you finalized your idols of Benitez and Carragher yet?

 

I really don't put much into that sort of thing typically. Leonard was the better fighter.

 

Well, what on Earth could i add to that

 

Brilliant fight by SRL, and this coming from a big Benitez fan. A few points:

1)SRL showed great wisdom in keeping Benitez at the end of his punches and not getting caught in trading with Benitez where his amazing defense and counterpunching would catch SRL, and it did in those exchanges where Leonard became a little too confident.
2) I thought this was a close fight, and scored it in depth once on another site and I believe I had it 8-5-1 with several rounds difficult to score.
3) Even though I love Benitez, you are all perfectly correct to point out that this is professional boxing, and lack of discipline and/or training is not an excuse (unless youre a young Joe Walcott or Henry Armstrong fighting on an empty stomach for scraps).
4) Benitez' staredowns were great. None of this UFC over the top machoness, Benitez was the epitome of cool and his staredown with Hearns is my all time favorite. Benitez has the aura of a boxing master, he exudes a confidence like "Who is this crude brute daring to challenge me?"
5) Benitez was such a prodigy and boxing came so easily to him, it is easy to see why he didnt train. He defeated an all time great before he was an adult. He wouldn't train and he would defeat great and very good fighters. What incentive really was there for him to train when it came so easy? And we see this all the time in the workplace and school. The kid who isn't challenged in school has no reason to up his effort. Why work hard when you can not work and still get As?

 

It wasn't seriously meant. Should have put a smiley alongside. But threads about how physically and mentally out of shape Leonard's opponents were ... have been done a couple of times. This is the first on Benitez, but that's not enoug to make it feel fresh.:good

 

who has the patiece to watch a fight so long and boring? This fight is vastly overrated. I'll go back and watch it again to see if there's something I missed
