a look at the not quite prime time ray leonard .. this was the fight directly before the wilfredo benitez fight ..i feel it gave a hint of the future for this "young kid" from palmer park who would go on to do bigger and better things....he fights a strong tough contender in andy "the hawk" price who as the video states has wins over cuervas as well as palmonio

this was definitly a decent step to the next "step" for leonard ... probably gave him a boat load of confidence as if he didn't need anymore ..going into the benitez fight

    your thoughts?

Very impressive win by Leonard. Contrary to popular belief, he did not take an "easy route" to a title shot.

That version would've buried Terry Norris.

His finish against Lalonde takes some beating as well.

I used to own this fight a couple of years ago. It's a very professional and sharp bombardment which leads to the knockout. Leonard, like Salvador Sanchez, had a long reigning champion's brain before he was even champion.

An impressive showing and one that might even inspire a few here to say he would bury Terry Norris which is like saying Howard Davis would bury Hector Camacho.

Such claims are based strictly on pure emotion, hype, and spite.

Let's be honest: Price was nothing more than a harmless ex contender-a plodder with no punch and no chin and with several losses resulting over the previous two years which all prove my point. A man clearly going nowhere but down.

Check his rather spotty record between years 1976 and 1978 on boxrec. You will come to see that once again, the win is way overblown.

No it isn't. Davis never scored a one-round KO, and Camacho has never been stopped.

No, he was still in the top 10 when Leonard fought him.

No, he was moving steadily on up the rankings at the time Leonard fought him.

Check out his rather UN-spotty record between the years 1979 and 1982, which is when the fight actually happened.

No? What are all those losses I see then? If his record is so unspotty in those years he wouldve reappeared in the ratings. He didnt. :smoke

Since the Cuevas fight in 76 the record shows

Jose baquedano KO by 6

in his next fight, Julio Gomez L10 :!:

    Harold Weston L10

    Dave Green L10

That's four losses since his last big win which means he's going nowhere, like it or not. What would you conclude about Leonard if you saw 4 losses within two years?

I trust my point has been made? :smoke

I have no idea. The only loss I can see he suffered between '78 and '82 was to Leonard.

    Why do you say that?

Except BACK UP THE RANKINGS, which is the direct opposite of "nowhere".

Nothing. I would take the time to familiarize myself with the entire situation rather than just make indirect assumptions.

No it hasn't, all you've done is contradict yourself some more.

Got to say it, I'd fancy prime Leonard to knock out Norris as well

I know you didnt. it was a good win but for Robbi to say Ray would have levelled Norris that day I felt needed a response. so I put it all in proper perspective and now he's silent once more.

That's actually one of my favorite knockouts of all time, and Angelo Dundee was worried that Price's literal beard would soften the blow on punches that Leonard would land....LOL

Excellent post Rooster. I have no problem with anyone who feels Leonard in his prime beats Norris but to act like it would be a domination is laughable, especially when using Andy Price as the measuring stick. Truth be told Norris was the best offensive fighter Leonard has face in his career, and that would have been the case whether Leonard was in his prime or not.
