Or even what Cotto would have done to them at the same points in their careers. Floyd looked unimpressive (although. I thought the Mosley win was a great performance - it's not like Shane's ever been stopped, but he's not been controlled like that before) against them. Cotto would have taken them out.

Not really...

* Floyd has been unimpressive against Mosley, Oscar and Marquez because he could have done more
* I still think the Mosley performance was good because of how he controlled him, but it was still safety first - especially compared to Forrest's wins over a better version of Shane. Or Cotto's for that matter.
* I believe Cotto, a lesser fighter than Floyd, would have demolished those three in much more comprehensive fashion if they fought Cotto in the same state. ]

It's just a more nuanced viewpoint that good/bad.

 

Fair play if YOU weren't impressed by the good performance against Mosley. I personally was.

How do you know that the state Mosley was in for the Mayweather fight was far from the state he was in when he actually fought Cotto, taking him to a very tight decision? There wasn't that much time between them and in his previous fight Mosley looked as good as ever, regardless of how good a stylistic match up it was for him.

 

Not too labour the point as such, but I remember many being convinced that Mayweather would be backed up all night by Mosley before their fight and then being surprised that PBF ruled the roost in that respect.

It does suggest that some have sold Floyd short in the past and not been able to judge his previous performances objectively ; in the context of who he was fighting, their styles, and how much he needed to dig deep etc etc - and how he would adapt/raise his game when faced with a different foe (mosley in this case).

SRL would be favourite if they fought but I think Mayweather is being short-changed (again) in this hypothetical match-up.

 

Yep, more strength in depth for the 70s/80s guys IMO.

I was impressed by it. I already said that. But in context it wasn't incredible.

And we can tell the state Mosley was in because he'd looked godawful against Mayorga. Also, Margarito was ****ed from losing so much weight, had looked awful in sparring and wasn't exactly focused from the dressing room shennanigans. It was an amazing performance by Mosley, but you need to look at the context.

Mosley was a year on from the Cotto fight when he faced Margo. It was then OVER A YEAR before the Mayweather bout. So two years removed which is an age when you're nearly 40. A very different fighter than the one that faced Cotto.

 

Agreed Shane looked dreadful against Mayorga but Jack was still in the corner then, which wasn't working out, and I don't think Shane was at his best at 154. Margarito wasn't coming down in weight either so there's no reason he should have had to lose any more than normal. All makes it very difficult to tell where Shane was really at against Floyd as opposed to Cotto 2 years earlier.

 

Did Mosley weigh a lot less against Mayweather than he did against Margarito?

 

147 for both. Not sure about his weight on the day though.

 

Cheers yeah his weight in the ring, he looked more pumped up powerful against Margarito whereas he looked almost slimmed down against Floyd.
