He looked awful the moment he took off his robe; just like Ali with Holmes, he looked like a late 30s/early 40s guy who kind of worked out versus a trained fighter. He just didn't look HARD like he did at his peak, even with his workouts. But what sealed the deal and capped off the disgust at the farce was his statement after the loss - something to the effect of, "Well, as usual, the rumors of my being injured were true" as an excuse why he got whupped. C'mon dude, take the loss like a man - someone beat you. Happens to everyone, except maybe Marciano ...

Leonard thought Camacho was shot and going to use him as a stepping stone for bigger paydays possibility a fight with De La Hoya he overthought himself.

It is simply a great boxer that came back once too many times and got smacked by father time.

Fighter who was an older, faded shell of his former self beats fighter who was an even more old and more faded shell of his former self.

SRL used his popularity to go in and out of retirement to cherry pick fights for many many years. Some worked out for him some didnt, This one didnt. Leonard only had 40 fights so the shop worn excuse doesn't work for him in his cherry picking part of his career

On November 25, 2012, in classic fashion, SRL sought a rematch of this fight. Brave, considering all things.

Ive just sat & watched that debacle again Saccharin Ray Leonard got exactly what he deserved a good butt whipping & was totally embarrassed by Camacho He's Saccharin Ray to me because he never earned the name Sugar Ray that was Mr Robinson. he was just a poor substitute. Also the way he stabbed Donald Curry in the back over the Hagler fight I can tell you without doubt he was NOT one of Texas favorite sons
Don was reported as saying he wanted to embarrass Leonard into fighting him next but when he saw what pitiful shape Leonard was in he wouldn't lower himself to challenge him. You only had to look at Leonards eyes & the vacant stare to see he was gone.spaced out

I learned Sugar Ray Leonard was having a public training session near my neck of the woods in Chandler at the Sam Marcos hotel weeks before the fight so i took the chance to go meet him in person.

I remember vividly. i was the only one who showed up lol,. He was extremely nice to me, one of the nicest persons and even jokingly suggested i get in the ring and spar with him. He even paid for my dinner at the hotel's restaurant!

I thought he looked lively on his sparring session and he landed a few hard shots on those. He really looked sharp.

But there was no way in hell he was going to beat Camacho. Camacho at this time had too much left in the tank, I still believed as i left the compound.

One thing to remember: Camacho was 34 himself, and had had something like 80 fights already. And he had been taking punishment for many years, unlike Leonard who was a bit rested. On the other hand, rested also means rusty, and Leonard was rusty. Camacho was not.

Another point: the winner was going to face Oscar De La Hoya soon. i cringe at imagining what Oscar would have done to Leonard at this point of their career, but it would have been a major promotion because of their gold medals, the old vs new aspect, the Black v Hispanic aspect, the all Americans aspect, the Sugar vs Golden Boy aspect...i can only imagine....

It would have also been Holmes-Ali 2 but hopefully with a quicker and more merciful ending. Remember, Holmes-Ali was also a major promotion in 1980.

Camacho at that point was active beating clubfighters so he could get the occasional big fight where he would only try to survive.

Leonard was 40, but I was still surprised to see Camacho stop him.

It’s too bad the charges got dropped against the suspects. I didn’t even know that until your post reminded me to look it up.
