    This fight almost happened, twice.

    The WBA ruined it, when they said if the bout went through, they
    would immediately vacate the title.

    As usual, politics ruined what could have been a 'great fight'.

    Any thoughts,,,

    I can only see Ray winning this one. Comfortably and well inside the distance.

    April 1980

    Sugar Ray Leonard and Team, have stalled negotiations with Robert Duran for
    their proposed 1980 bout.

    When negotiations stall, the Leonard Team puts a call into Lupe Sanchez,
    Pipino Cuevas' manager.

    Both parties agree to fight, on a date in June or July, and in Mexico.

    Enter the WBA, officials Dr. Elias Cordova and Rodrigo Sanchez of Panama.

    They contact Lupe Sanchez, and inform him, that if they go through with this fight,
    they will vacate the WBA Title immediately. If Pipino wins, he will have to fight
    under WBC rules, and if he loses, he will never again get a fight for any WBA
    Championship.

    The fight between Ray Leonard and Pipino Cuevas is cancelled, when Pipino
    gets cut in training camp,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,What A Suprise !!

    No way could Pipino match Ray Leonard in boxing skills, but

    he did punch harder and he had the 'equalizers',,,,,,,

    one lucky punch on a careless Sugar Ray could have turned the trick for 'Pipino'

    If Ray's careless,I could see Cuevas scoring a flash knockdown. Leonard would have been tough enough to bounce back though.

    Jose was not the fastest Welter on two legs, and with his straight Line approach with that upright stance, i suspect Benitez would of made a meal of it....the more predatory Leonard, After a bit of Showboating... Smirk whilst you work...Could be like the Dave Green fight...

    I always thought,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    ,,,,,,,if Wilfred Benitez fought Pipino Cuevas,,,
    ,,,,,,,he would have out-boxed Pipino for about 6 or 7 rounds, then get caught by a left hook.

    Senor Pepe, not wishing to tangent-off subject, but i think Wilfred would be minded to treat Pipino like a sweaty stick of dynamite..read it and dampen it down, no showboat juggling with it ! - he would be walking a highwire without a safety net but earlier Andy Price came through and allowing for vast improvements in pipino... he does not have the stealth..to fool the Radar i feel (just my feeling nothing more !)

    Very strange career for Pipino,,,,,,

    * Turns pro 1-month before his 14th Birthday

    * Wins WBA Welterweight Championship at 18 1/2.

    * Loses Title at 22 1/2

    * Considered Washed-up at 1-month before he turns 24.

    I am not a SRL fan by any stretch although I certainly respect his body of work...On the other hand I enjoy Cuevas much more, but it also clear that he is not in the same league here.

    SRL is just to much for him, and I would pick a 5th round stoppage...I can't envision this going past 8 either way.
