Pipino did have a 'steel jaw',,,,,,,,,up to the point that Thomas Hearns ruined it.

Though he was prone to be hit, nobody put him down or staggered him, and he
did not have any stamina issues.

Mind you, that Boxing Illustrated picked Pipino over Sugar Ray by TKO in 9, in
    a 1979 magazine match-up.

    Pipino over Sugar Ray in;
    1976
    1977
    1978
    1979
    1980
    1981 (thru June)

    Sugar Ray over Pipino
    1981 (after June)
    1982
    1983

    * Throw out the Thomas Hearns bout. The worst possible match-up in styles for Pipino.

Leonard KO 5 in a pathetically one sided fight.

The difference in speed, and skill would be comical. Combined that with Ray's power, and Cuevas' **** defense, and it adds up to Cuevas getting stopped brutally.

    Yes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,everything says Sugar Ray Leonard,,,,,,

But not if they fought in 1979 or earlier.

    Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas
    Amateur Record (1970/1971).......26-9 (16 KO's)

Did you know that when Pipino turned professional in November 1971, he was
still under the age of 14 (13 years, 11 months).

His first 'two' years as a 'pro' he competed at 135 lbs. (Lightweight)
    Went 7-5-0 (7 KO's), while still learning.
Was considered purely a 'raw talent' with great punching power, at a young age.
Followed the 'typical' Mexican-style, of strictly offense, body punching and the left-hook.

He'd have that radar turned on up all the way and would have beaten Pipino easier than he did Duran,...he'd never blink during this fight..it would have been a Benitez masterclass performance.

Ray all the way, but he couldn't take Cuevas lightly.

I like Cuevas. Leonard would probably be winning for most of the fight through his speed, but Pipino's blows have a cumulative effect. The unrelenting Cuevas eventually wears Ray out late in the bout, as he is unable to ultimately keep Pipino off.

There was definitely politics as to why this fight never happened as Pepe says, which does lead one to speculate how it would have gone. (It did provide us with Montreal though, so no complaints on my side.)

Have to agree with the others on this one. Ray was a class above the honest but limited Cuevas. I don't really think Pipino even has a puncher's chance.

I think Ray would win, but not by mid rounds knockout as some of you said. He took many Hearns clean right hands and stayed up. I think Ray wins it either by late stoppage or UD, but it would not be easy and Ray would have to box and not fight like he did Duran in June 1980.. This is a better fight for an experience Ray who knew how to fight his fight.

    The Pete Ranzany Report,,,,,,,,,

    * Was KO'd in 2 by Pipino
    * Was TKO'd in 4 by Sugar Ray

There is no comparison in punching power. Pipino could drive your jaw through
your brain. When he punched with that left hook, he drove it through like a
pile driver. No one could take that punch.

On Ray, he was fast and crsip, but nowhere near as much power. He had good power,
but the problem is that he was so quick, you had no time to retaliate.

Leonard way too skilled, way too quick and durable enough to take what Cuevas had to dish out. Leonard late TKO.

The defining difference between the two, punch-wise.

    Just The Facts,,,,,,,,,,,,June/July 1976

    An 18 1/2 year-old with only 21-bouts (15-6-0 (13 KO's) Record), and still learning boxing skills,
is offered a World Championship Bout.

The #9 WBA Welterweight is coming off a 10-Round Decision loss, to 'Quick-n-Slick'
Andy Price, a pretty good Welterweight himself.

Listed as a 6-1 underdog, Pipino Cuevas upsets a 28 1/2 Angel Espada, who with 47-bouts under his
belt (36-7-4 record) was regarded as the best Welterweight in the World.

Angel Espada, entering the bout has never been floored, and or stopped and
was in the 'prime' of his career. Over a 4-year period, Espada had gone 16-1-0 (9 KO's),
and his only loss was a 'Hometown Decision' to Luis Acosta in Venezuela.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 20 year-old Ray Leonard, is fighting 139 lb. (Light-Welterweights) in Montreal, in
    3-Round Amateur bouts.
