Hagler was a beast im talking a grown man. But I have watched Hagler vs Leonard im talking the pre fight and post fight. Also the real fight over 8 times! Each time i watch the fight try to see how the fight was close. But every time i watch Sugar Ray Leonard exposed Hagler. Hagler says Ray ran he just boexed Marvins socks off.
Leonard won that fight close but clear to me. Never understood the controversy surrounding the decision in Leonard's favor.
clear win for hagler. flurrying with pitter-patter punches for the last few seconds of each round is nothing like enough but leonard's story and the romance of it all was always going to be hard to resist for the judges. not the first or the last bad decision in boxing, not the worst either, but still a bad one. hagler deserved better.
Hagler won for me. I wasn't fazed by SRL's late flurries. However I rate SRL as the better boxer overall.
Fight was CLOSE there is no doubt about it, Hagler made a mistake with changing stance and gave away few rounds like that, that cost him that fight! And to say Hagler was exposedatsch
Well thats the thing with judges sometimes i wonder do they understand boxing , it was very close but as you said SRL fought last 30 seconds of every round and judges fell for it, god i hate the judges sometimes. But it was close and as i wrote above if only Hagler didnt switch his stance he would have won!
If you're interested, Grantland has a great oral history of the fight. Long read but very, very informative. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6983512/hagler-vs-leonard
ray beat hagler fair and square, anyone who claims it a robbery is living in a dream world. without a shadow of a doubt one of the greatest victories in boxing history. people can claim that hagler was over the hill but his last 2 wins were great performances v hearns and mugabi and leonard had only fought once in 5 years and never before as a middleweight. annoys the **** out of me when posters try and cheapen leonards victory over marvin.
Close fight, but Leonard won. In close fights the more visible punches to the head seem to determine winners. That's ****ed up, but that seems to have been the trend in scoring fights in recent years.
If its about punches landed, then SRL won. If its about a boxer versus a puncher, then SRL won. If its about ring generalship, then SRL won. Haggler was perhaps one of the most menacing fighters on the planet at the time. He came to fight and had a heart the size of a mountain. Looking threatening may convince some judges, especially if your opponent appears to want no part of you,but the storyline becomes perfectly clear when you watch the fight unfold round by round. Haggler lost fair and square. It was a boxing match afterall is said and done, and SRL did what he had to do to win it. A great fight by two extraordinary human beings. :deal
If there was ever a fight that could've gone either way, this was it. I'm a huge fan of Ray,but I can see a case for Marvin getting the nod,but I saw it as a miraculous performance by Ray and if you're honest,it would be hard to score that fight without letting certain circumstances enter your head. Ray did just enough.
This exactly. You said it for me. The only thing controversial about the fight was the 118-110 scorecard, but at least he had the right guy winning.
I think Leonard won based on being the ring general. I mean Ray landed more shots, Hagler's were harder. OK. Effective aggression even. Then I looked at who was controlling the fight and how it was fought and it was Leonard. Close fight but Ray frustrated Hagler IMO.
