I gave the fight to Hagler. Leonard missed me with those shoe-shine punches. Hagler landed the more effective shots. Also Hagler got Leonard on the ropes plenty of times in that fight.
He did at times run, but so much of what Leonard did with the flurries did nothing. Hagler won the fight, he dictated and landed the harder punches.
I was huge fan of SRL and I thought he lost that fight when I saw it live with my dad. I remember arguing with my father why I thought SRL won but I knew in my heart that he lost and was only trying to protect my idol. I thought it was close but MMH won that hands down . . . I cannot believe people cannot see that SRL was trying to steal the rounds with only s few seconds in each round and the shoe shine punches had no affect. if it was an amateur fight where a light punch counts the same as a strong power punch then you might have an argument. Its not and the score cards and History got it wrong
turn the sound off. watch the fight in a clinical manner. Take the emotion out of it. If haglar was all he was made up to be,and he was, which was a warrior that was second to none and fights to prove it....why did he not stop Leonard? the "feather fisted" SRL won against the odds on favorite. That SRL didnt get hurt proves who won the fight as far as results go.
I did too. I can either see a draw or Hagler winning (I gave the 10th to SRL, which easily could have gone to Hagler), but I can't see any scenario in which Leonard won.
Anyone who says SRL won doesn't know **** about boxing. Hagler was ROBBED bigtime. This ain't the amateurs were every tap counts. Hagler was the more aggresive boxer and he landed the power shots. All SRL did was to run and tap Hagler's guard. Hagler won hands down.
This was one of the most controversial fights in history of boxing. It should have been a draw. I've watched it over and over again and still wondering who won the 9th round. It was the most exciting round as they both traded punches the whole round.
Leonard used excessive movement and only fought for the last 20 seconds of each round, he also flagged after the first five rounds badly and his stamina went because of all his movement.
If the fight is very close then the Champion should be given the advantage. Hagler pressed the action every round from 1 to 12 while Lenonard ran away all night. But, the latter did good in countering the former. He didn't just run.
