round 1: 10-9 Leonard round 2: 10-9 Duran - huge left hook by Duran. Leonard hurt. round 3: 10-9 Duran round 4: 10-9 Duran round 5: 10-9 Leonard round 6: 10-9 Duran round 7: 10-9 Duran round 8: 10-9 Duran round 9: 10-9 Duran round 0: 10-9 Leonard round 11: 10-9 Duran round 12: 10-9 Leonard round 13: 10-9 Leonard - What a round! round 14: 10-9 Leonard round 15: 10-9 Leonard 8-7 Duran I thought it was an extremely close fight, with Leonard taking the last four rounds. Round 13 was an incredible round, and very close - and I could see some people giving it to Duran, but I gave it Leonard. They both scored with great shots. Duran got an early lead, and he hung on to victory by a point. Bit to late for Leonard to rally at the end. I know most people thought Duran won the fight clearly. If you can tell me which rounds you disagree on, I'll go back and review them and see if I can make a case otherwise. Some round were hard to score I thought.
Thought it was much more 1 sided personally matey, and I thought the rematch was more 1 sided in Leonard's favour than given credit for too
I own the fight & watch it every now & then, it makes my top 10 (probably top 5) fights easily. Ive never did a rd by rd score but to me, a very close Duran UD seems like the most accurate result. Close fight but Duran`s work in the 1st two thirds were just enough to keep his nose in front for a strong Leonard finish. 2 top 10 p4p legends in their prime going at it... not sure if that has EVER happened in history (even tho most here dont have SRL top 10, I do)
As I say PowerPuncher, if you specify which rounds you disagree with I'll go back and have another look. :good
Duran certainly won his rounds more impressively than Leonard. He was the one who continually landed the heavier blows, and I also thought that Duran's defense was noticeably better throughout the fight. If the fight was scored as one entire round, Duran wins by a distance.
Close fight, i'm surprised Duran managed to win despite being slower. Leonard made a mistake in trying to match Duran blow for blow, but showed his true greatness to me by really pouring it on and winning the last two rounds. I think i had it 8-6-1 or 8-7.
Duran won the fight, he deserved it, but Leonard made it close with some good work down the stretch. Anything from 8-7 to 9-6 is fine by me.
I Remember i had Duran winning by two points and it wasnt more cause he went into cruise control late in the fight.
I remember this fight being one sided in favor of Duran. In terms of excitement I always thought this fight is kind of overrated in that department. Way too much fighting on the ropes and in close corners to really consider this a great fight, good fight no doubt but not a great one in my opinion.
Really ? I think it was the best fight of all the fights between the fab 4 (Hagler-Hearns would have been best if it was longer but 3 rds dont compare to 15, I dont care how good rd 1 was)
Duran vs Leonard was just a good fight going into the 10th, but from then on out it was all out slugging - an absolute war. A great fight. Round 11 and 13 were particularly good.
Of the Fab Four fights I think Hearns-Hagler is the best and 2nd place is a tie between Leonard first fight with Hearns and with Hagler.
I'm increasingly aware of the notion that my own taste differs a bit from most Classic members. This is my favorite fight of all-time, and I particularly enjoy the early rounds. In round 1, Duran is troubled so much by Leonard's ridiculous speed that he's hardly in the fight. He tries several different means of approach, which mostly fail, and you can see he's leery of the handspeed as well. I've watched this fight upwards of a dozen times. Seeing how Duran copes and ultimately conquers a speed deficit and goes from seeming considerably slower to almost equally fast is pure boxing. He doesn't actually get faster, of course, but the timing, the feinting, the slipping, angles, in-and-out of range way of positioning the feet, changing the tempo whenever Leonard is near the ropes -- just makes it seem they are on equal footing. Every time I watch this fight, I see new things. There's just so much in it.
To tell you the truth i have no idea but it was probably a combination of all three and Duran thinking that he was clearly ahead at the time.
