Who do you like? Does Robinson just plow through whatever Leonard throws at him and beat him up like Duran did? Or could Leonard box on his toes and move to steal a decision with precise punches and staying out of the exchanges? Whats your take?
Leonard could be a bit slicker than Robinson when he wanted to, but that aside, I'm struggling to think of an advantage he holds here. Robinson takes a clear UD. Just a matter of being that bit better at practically everything.
Robinson is better in terms of skills, but not by much. Leonard is smarter in the ring. I'm going with Leonard by decision 8-7.
Nah, Leonard was faster. I just don't think it'd make much a difference in the fight. They jab at each other on the outside, Robinson wins (he's a better mover with a better jab). They war it out in exchanges, Robinson wins. They just straight slug, Robinson wins. He's got the upper hand any which way the fight goes down.
Controversial pick. I like it! I do favour Leonard's Ring IQ whereas Robinson relied heavily on his physical gifts to get him through (which for that time was immense we have to admit) They both had granite chins. it's a more even fight than I think a lot realize.
leonard nicks it by a round or two being able to steal rounds and feint Robinson out of position. Also, robinson got hit a bit 2 much for my likin' and once leonard got into a nice groove i think he could outbox him in a lot of the rounds and be able to get out of the way of Robinson's wide hooks
I like these picks in here. I think if anyone could really test and possibly beat a prime Robinson, it's a guy with the style and toughness of a prime Leonard. He's not an easy nut to crack for anyone. That said, I'm going with Robinson just slightly. His flurries and fast multiple hooks will have Leonard a bit tentative and give him just enough of an edge to let hm operate with more comfort than Leonard will be able to.
Good points. Its really too bad we dont have much of a prime 147 lb Robinson. I always wanted to see the draw between he and Brimm. I've read its as Nip and Tuck as it can get.
I think Robinson was a shade faster with both his hands and feet. SRR hit harder with both hands and he was slightly taller and had more range. I wouldnt be too quick to say that Leonard had a better defense unless your just going from the older tapes of Robinson. Chins were about even. Ring smarts even. The only area I would give Leonard an advantage would be on the inside. Sugar Ray Robinson by decision with a knockdown or two.
Ive thought about this a thousand times and more often than not i see Leonard giving SRR all he wants. I still pick Robinson but he doesnt have it all his own way and i can see Leonard getting 1 outta a trilogy (all decisions). No mean feat v a prime SRR
mathematics counts for loads & loads of reality too! SRR had over 200 fights with very few losses and fought real Champions & Top 10 Contenders for 25 years. He's done it, it can't be reversed, it's set in stone for All Time!!! as I've said a million times, these guys have already done it, they don't get questioned, the questions fall on Modern Day fighters. IF they had to do the same, "How many would stay on top? Would they fall away long before achieving the same?" I fear most would, best evidence Roy Jones Jr. Ray Robinson all day long!!!
We all know Leonard could steal rounds, but Robinson's fast combinations are even if not better in my eyes. Robinson has the ability to steal just as many rounds as Leonard.
U think he'd have beaten him up like Duran did ? i think it would have been much worse . I M surprised d poll's results r so close right now (10-4 , including myself) , but , i believe that it will b more lopsided , quotientwise .
Certainly can't be a mere coincidence that god selected Mr Leonard to fight in the age of colour? Robinson was good for his time, but there's a reason we're stuck watching him in black and white. The black and white film perfectly captures what a dull, bland world we lived in prior to the widespread introduction of colour into film/photography. Objectively speaking,Robby is lucky to make it out of the third round. The stage would be too big,the pressure too much.
