I disagree. Hagler always did better in rematches and frankly, I thought Hagler edged it out when they did fight.

The more interesting question, I think, is why did a rematch never happen?

Hagler claims he waited around for a year and that Ray never gave him the rematch. Leonard says otherwise in this interview.

What's the truth of the matter?

    You actually believe SRL?

This is the same guy who invited Hagler to that big announcement when everyone thought it would be to announce that he would accept the fight with Hagler when in reality, it would be just to announce his retirement.

SRL didn't want to give Hagler the chance or the satisfaction of a rematch IMO. Hagler said he never picked up a glove ever again after that fight.

Who do you believe? The attention seeking ***** in SRL or the honest, hard working fighter in Hagler? Tough one.

I like Hagler as much as anyone, but he was a sore loser with Leonard.

First of all, he only had himself to blame for the loss. What was his business coming out in the early rounds and trying to box? Then he claimed he was never hurt. Why then didn't he just KO Leonard? At several points in the fight when he had Leonard on the ropes, Leonard flurried and backed up Hagler. Against Hearns, Hagler walked through power shots and destroyed him. The truth is, Halger was overconfident for that fight, he just assumed he couldn't lose. Leonard had a perfect gameplan and excecuted it well enough to earn a close win.

I agree with your post but that is not related to the question at hand.

I would have watched a rematch...he was still fighting in 89 when he fought Tommy again...I would have loved to see him fight Marvin

    That was totally lame.

My opinion, he didn't do the rematch cuz he thought he wouldve lost.

It sort of sounds like SRL is admitting he cherry picked Hagler because he looked so vulnerable against Mugabi.

Well this is what Hagler had to say about this, but I guess we will never know who was telling the truth here.

I had watched for the first time a few weeks ago and did the scorecard thing and had it 8-4 for SRL
