I had 7-5 for SRL, I dont understand the contraversy, Hagler gave away 5 of the 1st 6 rds on my card, only winning the 5th & the only other clear rds I gave him were 7 & 8, he defo won those rds, I gave Marvin 9 & 10 but both could have gone to SRL, Leonard deserved rd 11 & I gave him a close 12th rd as well.

    My card was.....
    Leonard - 1,2,3,4,6,11 & 12.
    Hagler - 5,7,8,9 & 10.

It would have been very hard for Ray to beat Marvin again. Had they fought in October of 1987 about the time of the Thomas Hearns/Juan Roldan fight, that was only about half a year later and Marvin would not have been rusty anymore. I think Marvin comes out southpaw and a little more aggressive. I do think Marvin was diminished from the Hearns fight in 1985 at that point, but I think coming out lefty he gains the momentum and wins a decision or late round knockout over Leonard.

Hagler was a bit of a crybaby after that fight. He is a great fighter and has tremendous heart, but he whined and whined about it and even after the Hearns/Roldan fight Ray and Marvin met in the bathroom at the hotel and Ray said "great fight" and Marvin didn't answer him and walked out. To me if he was so confident about winning he could have acted nicer to Ray and maybe gotten the fight. I think his whining hurt his chances, and maybe Ray knew Marvin would be pumped up in the rematch so he was not going to give him one, but Marvin acted a bit like a whiner and that didn't show he really wanted the fight. He looked like he wanted to complain more about the first fights decision than fight again. There is even talk that Hagler would fight the Hearns/Roldan winner in rematches with either guy, but that never happened. I just do not think Marvin really wanted to fight again, and Ray probably didn't either.

Hagler screwed himself in the first fight. He took the money but let Leonard have the big ring to move around, the heavyer gloves so Hagler's power was taken away, and allowed it to be 12 rounds not 15. Hagler also gave away early rounds due to strategy. I think Hagler loses a rematch simply because Leonard by far was the better boxer and no matter what Marvin did he was to tricky and Dundee always had a perfect plan for his fighters. I think it is Leonard's fault a rematch did not happen though I think He'd win and I also think he had bigger things planned like moving up and winning another belt and a Hearns rematch and a Duran 3rd.

Guess we will always have to wonder what would of happened, but I believe that Hagler would of started quicker to win more rounds and maybe stop Leonard late. What I'd like to do is get Hagler back on the show some day and hear what he has to say about Leonard's comments about why there was never a rematch :yep

I assume Leonard didn't want it. Hagler is the kind of guy who would definitely try to avenge a loss.

Don't know but at the post fight press conference Hagler was already talking retirement and was saying he was robbed because the commision knew that he wanted to retire and that they figured if he ended his career with a loss then he'd be forced to stay in it longer. He said he didn't want to give them that satisfaction. Don't know about later but this is Hagler's own words right after the fight.

I remember watching this fight with my dad. I was a huge SRL fan and remember thinking before the scores were read that Leonard had lost. My dad, who was a Haglar, fan was pissed because he thought he was robbed. I have watched that fight about a dozen times since and I think MMH won. Sure SRL had all the flash with his shoeshine punches but I thought the chap should have won that fight. In the end I kinda believe haglar that SRL did not really want to fight again. ( I am And forever will be a SRL FAN!)

Rummy I went to High School with Marvin's oldest son Champ (Marvin Jr but he went by Champ) and he told me that his dad was so disgusted with the Decision that he waited around for about a year for the rematch there were some very brief talks between the camps but that SRL and his people were pulling all their BS again.

Remember the first fight was strictly on SRL terms he decided the Ring size, gloves, etc. and Hagler just said screw it I am not going to fool with these people again. Hagler is a very direct and no nonsense type of guy. SRL was playing games and making too many ridiculous demands so Hagler said screw it.

You have to wonder what would have happened had Hagler not fooled around fighting Ortodox the first few rounds that was the difference in the fight.

    Typical *******........and another hogwash statement.

I was an avid boxing fan back then, so I should know who kept a rematch from happening.

Hagler actually let it be known publicly that he wanted a rematch, but Leonard's statement to that was that he had come out of retirement for just the one fight with Hagler and he was'nt interested in a rematch.

Hagler-Leonard was fought in april of 87, and when it was evident to Hagler that Leonard did not want to rematch him, Hagler retired.

.......lo and behold, 18 months later Leonard is pickpocketing 2 bogus titles in one night against Donny Lalonde.......

It was'nt until Leonard shamelessy decisioned Roberto Duran in a non-fight in a shameless debacle titled Uno Mas, did Leonard publicly start to call out Marvin Hagler again.......about 3 years after Hagler had retired!:patsch:-(

The time for a rematch was right after the controversy,(Hagler wanted it)..... not 3 years after an old Hagler had been sitting on his ass in Italy being an actor.

I've always said Hagler got the last laugh on Leonard, because after Leonard hadfought Hearns and Duran in rematch fights that should have taken place years earlier..........Leonard then called out Hagler's name for most of 1990......
Hagler simply ignored Leonard's callouts.:yep:happy......and this is what led to Leonard setting up a drop down in weight and getting his arse SHELLAKED by "Terrible" Terry Norris!!!!:deal:bbb:bbb:lol::lol::lol::lol:
There is a God somewhere!!!!!:deal:deal.....and Hagler must have been sitting there looking with a smile on his face!:D:yep

Hagler should've been more aggressive, even Petronelli says that. Hagler probably felt that he didn't have to really adjust much for Leonard, the smaller guy who hadn't fought in 3 years, so he boxed more patiently as usual. He had to switch it up and be really aggressive and fight up close against Hearns, who was considerably taller and rangier, and was a master at out-boxing.

It do think it may be possible that Hagler didn't have another Hearns-type performance in him after 65+ pro fights.

It was pretty clear to me that Hagler had slowed and was easier to hit. Leonard had declined as well, as would be expected, just not nearly as much as people had expected.

Actually during the time Hagler was letting it be known that he wanted a rematch, Leonard was publicly and through the media saying that his fight with Hagler was a one fight deal, that he was back in retirement.

......when it was evident Leonard did'nt want the rematch, Hagler retired and he actually did it without fanfare or even calling a newsconference, which is what Leonard would do everytime he so much as wanted to announce he had farted.
