hagler made himself look bad by not throwing punches and coming out for the first what? 3 rounds orthodox then reverting to southpaw one of the worst plans i had ever seen
People don't give him credit to exactly how hard he hit. Look at the Davey Boy Green knockout. Make no mistake about it, Boy Green was average at best, but Leonard almost about killed him. He had Floyd Mayweather on ***** street, first guy to beat and stop both Hearns and Benitez. The guy could bang. I just brought Sugar Ray up because although he is widely considered one of the best, he gets a lot of flack on this forum. The man was as good as anybody in his prime in my opinion.
The best staredown Ive ever seen was Benitez v. Hearns. Hears looks menacing in staredowns and Benitez has this cool confidence to him.
Leonard was awesome. He would make mince meat out of Mayweather Jr. Crazy speed (especially in combination punching), a great chin, solid power when he really sat down on shots, sweet Ali-esque movement, a great 'boxing brain', immense heart and desire, killer instinct/deadly finisher, etc. He deserved the 'sugar' name.
I remember talking to Angelo Dundee a few years ago when he was working with heavyweight Atilla Levin, he said when he faced Hearns the first time all they were talkin about was Hearns this, motor city cobra that, Tough guy Hearns, hard Detroit hitman garbage, Angelo said they thought he was a petty Pat puncher and were going to blow Ray away , but in actual fact it is Ray that had the tough street life, he was from Maryland and had a tougher neighbourhood than Tommy and when it came to being tough , Ray Leonard was the real tough ******* in that fight.. The look on Tommys face when Ray laid a solid right hand on him was priceless.. Ray Leonard was a hard son of a *****.. Manny Steward learned a valuable lesson that night , never judge a book by its cover.. Ray can whack...
Amazing fighter, had nearly everything, unbelivable hand speed, good power, decent defence, good outside fighter, lovely movement, not so good in close but still more than decent. number 2 at welter and top 10 atg in my opininon. And can anyone think of someone with a better top 4 wins that leonard, maybe greb but struggling after that
Benitez, Hearns, Hagler, and Duran. Unbelievable. If anyone has the Hearns staredown, I'd love to see it. The one with him and Leonard sends shivers down my spine!
Charles beat Moore thrice and Louis once. But then, those are wins over 2 fighters, whereas Leonard's wins were all over different opponents. 3 of those opponents in my top 35 ATG's. I'd say among top wins, Leonard's wins over Duran, Hagler, Hearns, and Benitez are about as good as it gets. Greb's wins over Tunney, Walker, Loughran, and Gibbons come close, but Leonard still takes the cake in my eyes. Let's look at the best of the rest just because: Robinson: Gavilan X2, Armstrong(old), Basilio, LaMotta Ali: Foreman, Frazier X2, Liston X2, Patterson Other than these, I see none that even stack up as far as top 4 wins. In terms of quantity though, plenty far outdo him.
Charles top 3 wins, which i have as moore, louis and burley is amazing, all 3 of them in my opinion have to be taken into consideration when compiling a top 20 atg list though they may not make the final cut, however the 4th win for charles which i would have as walcott just leaves him a bit behind leonard. It just shows what an incredible achivement leonard had by beating 4 top top line operators and the fact its pretty much unprecedented in boxing history to beat 4 fighters of such quality Totally agree about the fact other fighter have more quantity in there resume and this is what stops leonard breaking top 5 atg for me
