On the face of it,a bit of a size mismatch,is n't it ? Not really.........Ray challenged Joey Maxim for the 175 lbs title in '52,and Floyd fought him in '54 I think. Who takes it ?
Why not? Patterson was basically a SMW when he turned pro in late 1952. He was 168 Lbs. when he fought Maxim in 1954. The decision went to Maxim but Patterson deserved the win. Patterson did not fight over 175 Lbs. until late 1955 (175 1/2 Lbs.). He only weighed 182 1/4 Lbs. when he beat Archie Moore for the vacnt HW Title in late 1956. 6' with a 71" reach. Robinson fought Maxim in 1952 and was well ahead on points prior to the stoppage right before the 14th round. Robinson weighed in at 157 1/2 Lbs. but had weighed in a little over 160 Lbs a few times prior to this fight. he was 5'11" with a 72 1/2" reach. So, Patterson is an inch taller and about 8-10 Lbs. heavier. Robinson has a 1 1/2" longer reach and is quicker.
Robby had an utterly obscene advantage in experience at this stage. Floyd was an eight round fighter. Maxim described Patterson by saying "He punches fairly hard-a jolting puncher, sort of a miniature Archie Moore or Lloyd Marshall, but not as smart." That wouldn't be enough. Floyd was 19 years old at the time, and not fully grown. I think SRR would have taken the kid to school.
Sugar Ray by WHITEWASH UD! :mj lil Patty was a green skinny kid back in '54 And was always v.one-dimensional with his "self-defeating peekaboo style" where you "cant see incoming punches due to your v.high block"(XPERT-quotes from MCvey).:deal Foreman Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooook!:hat
I think a 30 year old 157 pound Robinson beats a 19 year old 167 pound Patterson. But a year a two later, when Floyd's a solid 180 pounds and more experienced, he'd be too big and good for Ray.
Aye m8, but that would be unfair as hell. A 23LBS weight difference! Like putting a 182LBS Prime Patterson in with a 205LBS Prime Frazier, lil Floyd would be eaten alive! :scaredas:
